    "Signs at the County Line"

"I was at the farmers market in Paxton a week ago, and from talking to people they don’t like the sign at the county line. I asked my cousin that lives in Paxton near Lakewood, the highest elevation in Florida, about the sign and he and his wife’s family don’t like it ether. While I was coming from Milton on Hwy 90 , I saw another sign before I got to Mossyhead, this is where I go upset. These signs separate Walton County from the beaches. The sign in Paxton is 54 Miles from the beach. It also has a logo of Sowal with a south Walton website on the sign. I feel these signs are designed to separate Walton County and would like to have them changed to include all of Walton County. I have not found out who put up the signs, but I plan on talking to the mayor of Paxton and Freeport in the next few months, while I investigate this. The sign on Hwy 90 is a old sign and has been there a few years, seems like I remember them from the early 2000’s , with the growth in Mossyhead they are inappropriate for today, as Mossyhead is experiencing at boom, as Paxton is also growing. I have a good solution, like Welcome to Historic Walton County established in 1824. As in 6 years we are planning a celebration for our 200 year anniversary. One of my fellow WCHA members Brenda Rees is leading a effort. Plus we have tons of history in north Walton, also the sign from 331 to Lakewood needs to be addressed as being a volunteer at the Walton County Heritage Museum I am constantly asked about other sites to visit. I am asking you to look into this, as with everything you have on your plate, and give me time to gather my information to report back to you. I have no doubt I can get public support behind this effort, there are 6 signs to consider, Paxton, Gaskin, Mossyhead, Choctaw Beach, Ebro, Ponce De Leon, Thanks Stephen"

I tend to agree with Stephen about the signs. We are one county. There is more to the County than just the beaches albeit no one would ever know it because we don't promote Walton County.

Some strategically placed Confederate trappings on those signs will get them removed quickly.:rolling:

Folks from the hinterlands save up their money, take off from work to go to the beach, not so much to visit the other beautiful parts of WC. I'm sold, the springs, the trails, the forests, the wildlife of WC are wonderful, still a secret for the most part. Selfishly, I would like to keep them a secret.

Those beaches, while beautiful, unique, and extraordinary are a money machine for this county. And I assume some of those monies provide those nice smooth roads all over the county. I just hope we can PRESERVE those beaches and the overall idyllic experience for the folks who have migrated from their annual Destin trip to SoWal as well as the long time SoWal visitors.

Although others probably do - I have no idea how the whole "South Walton" came to be in the first place. The name of this forum is "sowal.com" (South Walton). There's a whole lot of branding for "South" Walton, not just the signs.

Who created the whole "South Walton" concept? Just go to visitsouthwalton.com, it's Walton County TDC. You can even get a beach towel that says "South" Walton. You can talk to a "South Walton" specialist if you call.

Very strange and abuse of taxpayers money if you ask me. Maybe good marketing when the whole area was popping up - but it's not required at this point. Everyone knows about these beaches. Does anyone in living in Atlanta really need a come visit "South" Walton television advert in 2018? So now the TDC is a self licking ice cream cone.

I'm sure there are metrics being tracked and reported on - how many visitors each year with new goals being set to beat the previous years. But true to form - I doubt there is any thought to capacity - just growth. More growth, hire more TDC. A Self licking ice cream cone.

The South Walton concept was first created by nature just look at a map. It was then used as a smart marketing tool by the TDC. I did my basic training in Northern California and used to live In West Tennessee. The Gulf Shores, Orange Beach area of Alabama is known as L.A. Just about every state has one or more regions defined by a compass heading. This sounds like selective outrage. Tourist dollars are vital to the local economy and advertising is a must to stay competitive in the beach vacation business.

The signs should read welcome to Walton County. Paxton is known for being the highest elevation in Florida. It's just my opinion that a welcome sign should reflect that as a point of interest for those heading into the County.

The City of Defuniak is known for the historic district.

Choctaw Beach, Freeport & the Choctawhatchee Bay..etc.

Tourist dollars do drive the local economy and advertising all of Walton County's hidden gems (not just those in SoWal) is vital to the County as a whole!

Ya'll get to hold onto that goose that laid the golden egg when that's all you market for.

South Walton County was a local term used by locals forever. It isn't a city with its own name so something had to describe the area south of the bay. Santa Rosa Beach is an overall name but it only refers to part of South Walton. As well as Miramar Beach, Inlet Beach and the many beach towns..

The TDC signs are letting travelers know that they are not only in Walton County but are nearing the beaches that they are traveling to as visitors and tourists.

Is there a welcome to Walton County sign too? There should be.

The TDC does represent the whole county so I understand some confusion or even concern. I doubt if it's meant to do anything but inform the traveler. Maybe there is a more accurate way. But it isn't anything to cry over.

Maybe the county could post some signs on the north side of the CBW 331 bridge suggesting those travelers heading back home from the beach should stop at the Britton Hill overlook and take in its breath taking views.

I think the TDC has allocated some funding for various attractions in the northern part of the County. I recall discussions about it, just not sure what the status is. Maybe some of those funds could be used for new signage in different areas.

Personally, I think the signs are tacky. I like the plain green signs like those that say "Entering Okaloosa County" or whatever county it is.

I guess throw me in the "I'm here, now let's pull up the drawbridge" crowd, but I enjoy the peace and quiet and unspoiled beauty of the county North of the bay and would prefer to keep the Suburban-with-luggage-carrier-on-top-and-bicycles-hanging-off-the-back crowd down on the beach. Have a great day; I'm going hiking.

I think this is more about promoting the north end so that money is spent there. Based on the criticism from many folks on SoWal they would like things to be like NoWal.

These are the signs the TDC put up years ago down here AT THE BEACH and most on this board complained about them.I think it was because they were so big.
The big blue signs on 30-A OH NO!...:banned::whitetrash:
