Freeport, FL (March 26, 2017) — Save Underdogs and Alaqua Animal Refuge, two Panhandle animal rescue organizations, took in 47 Dachshunds today from a hoarding situation in Arkansas. Locals there reached out when resources in their area were unable to help and the situation became urgent. Efforts to find homes for the dogs had failed and the dogs were at risk for being turned to the local shelter and euthanized.

"Unfortunately, rescue organizations stay full all the time, but when you hear about cases like this one we do what we can to make it work,” said Terri Bondi, founder of Save Underdogs. "We work closely with Alaqua and are grateful that they could help, as it would have been impossible for us to absorb so many."

The dogs range from several months old to approximately five years. They will be evaluated, spayed or neutered, and will be available for adoption once they are healthy.

"This is a prime example of a caring individual who did not spay or neuter his pets and quickly got in over his head. These dogs are the lucky ones, but so many are not fortunate enough to find rescues or good homes,” said Laurie Hood, founder of Alaqua Animal Refuge. "The networking involved in getting these animals to safety was amazing. It takes a village and groups like Save Underdogs who will go above and beyond to help.”

Large intakes like this one put a strain on rescue organizations. Both groups depend on donations to be able to help animals like these and donations, adoptions, and volunteers are always needed.

It Takes a Village

Picture this:
A man in rural Arizona living in a small travel trailer with over 50 Dachshunds. The story is true and friends of Terri Bondi with Save Underdogs, a foster-based canine rescue in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, reached out to see if she could help.

The dogs had been well cared for but the man, who fed the dogs before feeding himself, was no longer able to care for them. The shelter in that area was his only option and the future looked grim for the dogs, as not many adoptions took place from there. By the time Terri received the call, there was only one day to spare and she sprang into action and arranged to pay transporters to leave right away and bring the dogs back to Florida to safety.

Alaqua Animal Refuge works with many rescues like Save Underdogs and quickly agreed to split the transport costs and the dogs with them. Twenty seven of the precious, long-bodied dogs arrived late Sunday evening! Applications have poured in as well, so they are all guaranteed to be in loving homes soon!

We are grateful to so many who stepped up to save the lives of these dogs. It truly takes a village!

Want to help? Alaqua depends on donations to operate our no-kill facility and your support allows us to continue to be able to take in these large cases, such as the 100+ Great Danes from a few months ago and the 47 puppy mill dogs from just last month! Just click here to make a donation.
