Walton County School Superintendent Carlene Anderson ordered public schools closed across the county Thursday and Friday, September 1st & 2nd. As commissioners declared a local state of emergency, parents' phones began ringing as the school district's automated alert system began notifying parents.

In a press release, Anderson said due to expected high winds and severe rain from Tropical Storm Hermine and the fact that some schools will be used as public shelters, the decision was made to close them.

Several private schools also announced their closures as well. His Kids Preschool and Daycare, First Christian Academy and Tri-County Headstart also announced closures for Thursday and Friday.

County officials will also decide on the early closure of county offices sometime Thursday. County employees should report to work as normal Thursday morning.
