Local Sources Drive The Menu At DIG

March 22, 2016 by Sarah Robertson

It's passionate and delicious work covering the best dining spots in SoWal, and we take it seriously! Open since May 2015, DIG (Dig in Gulf) is a café-style eatery serving up a coastal-inspired menu at The Market Shops next to Sandestin Resort.

Owners Monique and Chef Brian Murray are the dynamic duo behind DIG. They have worked together in restaurants since they were “just friends” and credit longtime trust and symmetry to the smooth transition of opening their own place. Monique with her organizational prowess runs the front of house and Chef Brian's domain is the kitchen.

Serving breakfast, lunch or early dinner, the menu features fresh salads, seafood, beef, chicken, sandwiches, pastries, and sides that are all extraordinary. Chef Brian's creations are guided by the fresh seafood and farm produce he can access from area farmers and fisherman. It all starts with the omelet of the day in the AM. and on to fish, soups, salads and sandwiches of the day, including "take away" meals for your family.

Chef Brian says, “South Walton has some of best Gulf seafood options in the country, what's good now is what we're going to serve.”

Regular customers are wowed by the unique Grouper sandwich, and we know why. The fresh grilled fish is the star - surrounded by creamy avocado, roasted red pepper and crisp lettuce. DIG's salads are filled with ingredients like farm fresh strawberries, local beets and tender baby lettuces. Even meat eaters will enjoy the vegetarian options such as DIG's daily grain bowls brimming with veggies and the tasty falafel wrap. DIG's falafel mixture is made in house with toasted spices, assertive flavors and is quite filling.

Prepared foods for pick-up are super convenient whether you're on vacation or headed to or from work. Pick up a pint of the popular tarragon-kissed chicken salad or smoky pulled pork for a beach lunch or grab a salad and tray of lasagna for an easy weeknight meal after the kids are done with practice. DIG Eatery makes it easy.

Part of DIG's menu changes depending on availability of local produce and the daily catch. What is available and fresh daily is what is served, with Chef Brian's creations reflected on the daily specials board. Monique has proud New Orleans' roots and the duo have years of restaurant experience from Nola to Orlando. Brian credits his work with Chef Emeril Lagasse for his menu having subtle southern influences.

"If I am going to use a nut, it'll be a pecan, if I am going to use a bean, it's a black-eyed pea" Chef Brian explains.

DIG Eatery is available for catering and with a little notice the Murrays will happily create customized menus for your events. Groups up to ten gather for a personalized lesson from chef and themed three course meal and wine pairing fun.

We suggest you start planning your SoWal Dining now because the season is upon us and DIG needs to be on your short list of local gems to visit. Can you DIG it?

DIG is located in The Market Shops at the entrance to Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. The restaurant is open 8:00 a.m. til 7:00 p.m. from Monday through Saturday and for Sunday Brunch from 9:30 a.m. til 3:00 p.m. Check out the menu at
