Marie’s, Tim, and Ike – The Perfect Weekend Combination
June 19, 2013 by Danny Burns
Marie's Bistro in Blue Mountain Beach is a favorite local hangout with a warm atmosphere and great food. Owners Hanie and Marie Nasri are always coming up with new ways to entertain. Now they have a new house band and when we visited last Friday night we were impressed.
Tim Jackson and Ike Bartley put on a great show. Tim and Ike have been working together since the mid-nineties. What a pleasure to see Tim out playing for the first time in almost a year. He’s been writing and recording with Zack Turner, a friend and colleague for many years, as the Overlanders.
The album was recorded live in two Airstream trailers – one the control room and the other the studio room – with musicians like Duke Bardwell, Kenny Oliverio, Matt Miller, Adam Purvis, and other locals. The album is titled “Waltz Across Walton County” and has the interest of the South Walton Tourist Development Council and The Travel Channel. But that's a story for another time.
“Ike is one of my favorite people to play with” says Tim.
After listening to them play together, it’s easy to understand why. With Tim’s smooth guitar style and Ike’s funky, percussive alto and tenor sax, they’ve quickly become the area’s most enjoyable duo. Marie’s and the pair are a perfect match.
Hanie and Tim have been friends for over 25 years. Tim says Hanie is the reason they’re playing there.
“We are so pleased that Tim and Ike are our regular Friday and Saturday night band,” Hanie tells us.
Tim says he was looking for a place to play. “I’ve had so much fun here. It’s really like a neighborhood pub kind of feel about it. Ike and I had a few offers to go to a few places. We wanted to go to a place where we’ve never played, to just chill and hang out. I’m having a blast.”
Some evenings are such fun for the duo and the crowd that they go into the wee hours of the morning.
“As long as people are here enjoying themselves, we’re here for them,” says Tim.
The duo played some great dance numbers by Van Morrison, Stevie Wonder, and many others. When they agreed to play a request from one of the patrons, the dance floor immediately filled to capacity and the joint was jumping.
Ike and Tim take turns with the vocals. Tim doesn’t sing often and says it was his family that talked him into singing. They love hearing him sing when he’s writing and think he should do it more often.
Ike has a big voice - not surprising as he’s a big man. He towers over folks as he roams the dance floor while playing. He might even come directly to your table for an up close and personal serenade, while playing one of his melodic solos.
My wife and I had such a nice time last Friday night listening to the great music and enjoying Marie’s sushi (the Dragon Rolls are our favorite). For good food, great music, and fun friends, Marie’s is now our favorite weekend place to go. Catch Tim and Ike every Friday and Saturday evening from 8:30 p.m. until...
