Relax Lakeside on The Porch at Old Florida Fish House
June 1, 2016 by Audrey Johnson
Sushi and sake go together like fish and Florida. And when you put them together in a lovely old house on the shores of Eastern lake, wonderful things happen. Wonderful, delicious things. Old Florida Fish House is known as a local’s late night gem, but The Porch is now open for lunch. Enter: the lunch crowd.
As you walk down the path shaded by live oaks to the house on the lake with an Old Florida feel, all roads lead to The Porch. Owners Jill McDonald and Sandy Thomas took over in 2013, eight years after the restaurant opened its doors. Then they transformed the once cluttered storage room into The Porch, giving the lunch crowd a place to relax and have a great meal with panoramic views of Eastern Lake.
The lunch menu carries on the tradition of excellence long established at Old Florida Fish House. Firm Fried Green Tomatoes are drizzled with lemon burre blanc, while the Smoked Tuna Dip features sashimi grade tuna smoked in house and arranged on a bed of pickled vegetables. Yes, apparently that’s a thing…and it’s awesome.
Specials like the Fruit of the Gulf Salad give you an idea of the creativity in the kitchen. The bed of greens is blessed with the presence of grilled shrimp, blackened grouper, and fried oysters with beautiful presentation.
Equally creative and gorgeous menu staples include the Florida Reuben, blackened Mahi-Mahi with coleslaw, melted provolone and fried pickles on toasted wheat bread. The Crab Cake Sandwich offers another interesting take on fish house staples. Gumbo on The Porch is loaded with Shrimp, Scallops, Crawfish, Crab, Tasso and Andouille Sausage, and it’s savory and wonderful.
You’ll fall in love with the Key Lime Pie. The thick graham cracker crust combined with rich filling tastes like candy. If you can finish the whole thing, you might get the itis, but it'll be so worth it. The Porch also has a full bar and hi-def TVs making it the ultimate daytime hangout spot.
The party gets started every afternoon from 4-6 at Old Florida Fish House during one of the best happy hours in South Walton. Roll into dinner with some unique creations at the sushi bar, like the Picasso-a riceless roll with tuna, yellowtail, salmon, cilantro, avocado, lemon and Siracha with a soy wrap. The refreshing Summer Summer roll comes with crunchy yellowtail topped w/ salmon, lemon, and avocado. Japanese beers and warm and cold Sake round out the sushi experience at Old Florida Fish House.
In addition to the sushi bar, dinner is served in a dining room overlooking Eastern Lake, and a semi private dining room for large groups celebrating birthdays, anniversaries and the like. A full bar adjacent to the sushi bar is hand made from cypress pulled from the lake and it owns as much character as the restaurant itself. In all, Old Florida Fish House is one of the roomiest restaurants in South Walton, with enough seating for over 300 people.
Live music is a big part of Old Florida Fish House’s identity. Enjoy local bands Wednesday and Thursday from 7-10 pm.Then The Fish House Band takes the stage from 8 pm-midnight on Friday and Saturday nights.
