Seaside's 2013 Half Marathon and 5K Event - A Community Affair

February 25, 2013 by Marla Burns

It's a new year and 2013 is moving fast as one of South Walton's most popular events is coming around again the first weekend in March. Seaside's Half Marathon and 5K Run, established in 2003 to raise funds for the Seaside Neighborhood School, has become a huge community affair, drawing more than 3,000 runners from around the world.

The course, for both the Half Marathon and 5K, is mostly flat and fun at any pace, all along Scenic 30A, starting in Seaside and passing through the beach communities of WaterColor, Grayton Beach, Blue Mountain and Gulf Place in Santa Rosa Beach.

The race itself is sold out, but the three-day experience offers a full schedule of activities from live music, silent auctions and an expo, as well as a post-race party and awards ceremony.

To kick off the weekend, on Friday, March 1 enjoy a Pre-Race Party at the beautiful venue of Caliza in Alys Beach. The Evening for Education Under the Stars takes place from 7-10pm, and features music from the talented songwriter, Rhett Miller, front man for the rock 'n' roll quartet The Old 97's. Guests will also enjoy a silent auction in a delightful setting and admission includes one drink voucher with additional drinks and limited food available for purchase. Tickets are $30 per person (plus applicable service charges) and are non-refundable. Tickets are available online prior to the event at www.ticketalternative.com or charge by phone at 1-877-725-8849. Please keep in mind that this is an intimate event and there are a limited number of tickets available, so don't wait or you may miss out.

Saturday, March 2 from 12-6:00pm in Seaside's Lyceum and Seaside Neighborhood School, race participants can pick up their race packets and everyone can enjoy an Expo that's FREE and will offer a wide variety of equipment, apparel, footwear and accessories for the whole family. You'll find a great selection of merchandise at great prices!

The main event of the weekend takes place Sunday, March 3 with the Half Marathon starting bright and early at 7:00am at the Seaside Post Office. The start of the 5K race follows close behind at 7:20am, and after the race, get ready for some post-race fun, including a great party, door prizes and plenty of food and drink picnic-style.

Next up, everyone is invited to enjoy the awards ceremony and shop at the 30A Silent Auction tent. All proceeds from the weekend benefit the Seaside Neighborhood School, one of the first public charter schools in the state and will enhance the local educational programs.

Race organizers are still in need of volunteers to help in a variety of places and capacities throughout the weekend, including water stations, intersection control, entertainment, registration, medical support, and finish line. If you'd like to help out, see www.snsrun.com/volunteer-info/ for more details.

So bring your sunscreen and plan to have a wonderful time in a glorious setting along the Gulf for the 11th Annual Seaside School Half Marathon and 5K Run.
