Thanksgiving Dinner with Habitat for Humanity at Harbor Docks, Destin

November 6, 2012 by SoWal Staff

This will mark the eighteenth year Habitat for Humanity Okaloosa will coordinate volunteers to act as wait staff to serve Thanksgiving dinner to locals and tourists at Harbor Docks in Destin.  The annual Thanksgiving event has become a welcomed tradition to families along the Emerald Coast both as guests and volunteers.

Christy Jones, Habitat Okaloosa development director said, “This will be my eighth year to coordinate volunteers for Thanksgiving.  It is pretty amazing to see some of the children who started out rolling silverware with their parents, now waiting tables for guests or working in the kitchen for the day.  They have moved up in the ranks while their families continue to give time to help Habitat every year.”  In 2011, the 200 volunteers came from seven different states with the furthest 1,300 miles away in Connecticut.

Owner of Harbor Docks, Charles Morgan, supports the community in a variety of areas throughout the year, but each Thanksgiving he partners with Habitat to assist in helping relieve substandard living conditions locally.  Dinner is offered complimentary to guests with the option to donate ‘tips’ as a gesture to support the mission of Habitat Okaloosa.  Volunteers served an estimated 1,400 locals and tourists while raising more than $17,000 in tips during Thanksgiving last year.

If you are looking for a way to give back this holiday season consider joining Habitat Okaloosa for a traditional dinner.  Doors open on Thanksgiving at 11:00 a.m. with dinner being served until 7:00 p.m. at Harbor Docks, 538 East Highway 98 in Destin; a cash bar will be made available.

Habitat for Humanity Okaloosa County is a non-profit organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing in Okaloosa County.  Reservations are not available.  If you have any questions regarding this event or the Habitat program please call Christy Jones at 850-315-0025, Ext. 3 or visit www.habitatfwb.org.
