Kiwanis Club of Freeport- South Walton
The Kiwanis Club of Freeport South Walton has donated more than $80,000 to the local community. The Club sponsors Key Clubs at Freeport and South Walton High Schools. Each year the club provides scholarships for outstanding high school seniors who have demonstrated academic excellence and commitment to community service. They also contribute to the Emerald Coast Children's Advocacy Center (DeFuniak Springs and Niceville), the Children's Volunteer Health Network, Children in Crisis, and many other local nonprofits. Among fundraising in order to support local children in need, the organization also seeks to recognize and empower young leaders.
Once a month - during the school year - teachers in Walton County are asked to nominate children for the citizenship award on behalf of their respective school. One boy and one girl are chosen from each elementary school, and from each middle school in the county. The students chosen are invited to an award ceremony that not only recognizes the children through medals and trophies, but they also introduce the young leaders to the proper process of receiving the award; setting the expectation that they will be receiving many more in the years to come.
Kiwanis are a positive influence in communities worldwide—so that one day, all children will wake up in communities that believe in them, nurture them and provide the support they need to thrive. Kiwanis clubs focus on changing the world by serving children, one child and one community at a time. To reach more people and have a greater service impact on their communities, many clubs sponsor a Kiwanis family club—K-Kids for primary school children; Builders Clubs for adolescents; Key Clubs for teens; Circle K clubs for university students and Aktion Clubs for adults living with disabilities.
