Bummer dude!

This event has already happened. To be sure you don't miss anymore events in South Walton, visit the SoWal Events Calendar.

What: Star Gazing at Eden Gardens State Park
When: Friday, September 22, 2017
Time: 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm
Where: Eden Gardens State Park

Eden Gardens State Park will host a star gazing program on September 22, 2017. Volunteers from the Northwest Florida Astronomy Association will set up several telescopes for public viewing of star clusters, planets and galaxies. They will also answer questions about the night sky. All ages are invited to enjoy the evening of star gazing.

The star gaze is free but normal state park fees apply. The park closes the gate at sundown so make sure you arrive before then. For further information or to make sure the weather has not caused a cancellation, please call the park at (850) 267-8320. Event is weather permitting. Guests are encouraged to bring a flashlight with a red lens, bug spray and chairs.

Join the members of the NWFAA and view the beauty of the universe. We start by setting just before the Sun sets to allow our guest observers to view the equipment and get photos before it gets dark. Once the Sun sets, we transition to night time observing. Different size and design telescopes will be set up by dusk and celestial objects will be chosen with an eye to visual observation and variety. The objects visible will depend on the season and time of night but normally include bright galaxies and nebulae, star clusters, and planets.

There are a couple of rules that need to be followed so everyone enjoys the event:

Please do not touch the telescopes; an errant bump will cause a delay while the object being observed is brought back into view.

This is a family event and children are welcome, but since telescopes are by design somewhat delicate and may be expensive, parental control is necessary.

For everyone’s safety and to minimize the effect on night vision, please, no flash photography. If you want a photo of the equipment please come early enough to get a image before dark.

If you bring a flashlight please use a red filter.

While there will be plenty of telescopes available to view through, we invite you to bring your own telescopes/binoculars and join in the fun. Make sure you stop by the welcome table and pick up a free Sky Map.

The Friends of Eden Gardens State Park is a Florida Citizens Support Organization (CSO) which assists the Florida Park Service in the preservation, restoration and improvement of Eden Gardens State Park. Follow Friends of Eden Gardens State Park on Facebook for updates and events. Thanks to Friends of Eden for bringing some of the community's favorite festivals and traditions to the Park: Camellia Festival (Feb), Fall Film Series (Oct), and Christmas Candlelight Tour (Dec).

Our favorite SoWal State Park for taking a break from the beach is the spectacular Eden Gardens State Park on Tucker Bayou in Point Washington. Drive straight up Scenic Hwy 395 from Seagrove Beach, across Hwy 98 and you'll see the entrance up on the left.

The focal point of the park is the Wesley house, a beautifully renovated, two-story house with elegant white columns and wraparound porch complete with rocking chairs. Surrounded by moss-draped live oaks and ornamental gardens, the Wesley house inspires visions of hoop skirts and landed gentry. It's a favorite place for weddings and other events, and includes a covered stage for performances, a large screened pavilion, and bricked areas under the oaks for giant event tents.

Check out the Eden Gardens State Park Photo Gallery for lots of great photos of the park, including park events over the years during all seasons.
