There is a hole in the road in Blue Mountain Beach as a result of summer rains and flooding. The solution is currently under consideration in Walton County and will take more than a quick road fix to reopen this section of road on Scenic 30A.

What you can do is continue to support Blue Mountain Beach businesses just west of the 30A road closure. Make the detour! Take a few extra minutes to travel via Hwy 98 west to County Road 83 which takes you directly to Blue Mountain Beach.

Many restaurants and businesses are depending on locals and visitors to take the few extra miles detour and continue to eat, shop and continue support throughout this unfortunate long-term road closure.

Please make every effort to continue your support of local business in Blue Mountain Beach and every business on the West end of Scenic 30A, all easily accessed by taking Hwy 98 to CR 83, CR 393 and the west end entrance to Scenic 30A...

Show your support by visiting some of the BEST of the BEST in South Walton... Also, for those living and staying in BMB and 30A West, you can take the detour to the east end of Scenic 30A, continuing to support those businesses as usual. Hwy 98 is easy to access and frequently the best way to travel to avoid traffic on Scenic 30A.

I support this map and any support we can give to the businesses affected. T-shirts of this map and some cute witty slogan might be a good idea too. I really don't think a petition to goad the county into unwise actions is very helpful.

As I said before, the detour adds about 10 to 12 minutes to your trip. So all of us need to avoid the mindset of entitlement that seems to permeate this discussion. Lets just have fun with it.

Why don't they hold a farmers market on each side of the hole? You could walk from one to the other on the pedestrian bridge. Hole Foods they could call it. You could have lots of parking along the road.

I hope that the TDC, Walton Sun, and other local media and social media can follow SoWal.com's lead in getting the info out- maybe everyone can come together with a clear, succinct message about the detour- basically "brand" the road closure with everyone having the same info with the same look. It needs it's own logo and catchphrase. Since this will not be a "quick fix" (and we know the good reasons that it can't be), the local government and community will need to play a role in helping to manage the detour. A good start would be to relax some of the sign and scenic corridor restrictions so that Hwy. 83 is very visible on Hwy. 98. Maybe even a temporary billboard at that intersection. There are 5 dune lakes that need to have bridges installed, so as a community we will need to be forward thinking, creative, and patient for a while into the future.

It was cancelled as the media came out Friday to get a jump on the weekend. WEAR Ch3 was there today. Ironically a civil engineer showed up and got on camera expressing his thoughts on a solution and was intent on going to Seaside to shop. Not sure if he returned back to Miramar or went around.
