Green Seminar Showcases Environmentally-Friendly Homes and Towns
Alys Beach, FL?April 1, 2008

A growing number of homebuilders and developers in northwest Florida are including environmental concerns in their operations, and many local residents are looking for homes and towns built with green features.

Those wanting to learn more about going green should attend the upcoming seminar: Building Better Homes and Towns by Building Green, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 19. The seminar will take place as part of Earth Day festivities in Alys Beach, a new town in south Walton County that is incorporating many environmentally-friendly elements into homes and site development.

--Learn how following statewide and national green home and development standards results in a better home and neighborhood

--Hear examples of green construction and development from a local green builder and architectural designer

--Learn how to use the HERS Index to assess the energy-efficiency of new and existing homes

--Take a walking tour of Alys Beach and see firsthand environmentally-friendly features such as innovative stormwater treatment, energy-efficiency measures for the Gulf coast, solar panels, and more

Celebrate Earth Day at Alys Beach

Alys Beach, Florida ? (April 8, 2008) ? Alys Beach will host an Earth Day celebration on Saturday, April 19th.

Free and open to the public, the day?s festivities will begin with a seminar entitled ?Building Better Homes and Towns by Building Green.? Held at Fonville Press on 30A, the discussion will showcase environmentally-friendly homes, towns and building practices.

?A growing number of homebuilders and developers are including environmental initiatives in their operations, and many local residents are looking for homes and towns built with green features,? said Christian Wagley, Alys Beach?s Environmental Program Manager. ?We?ll be learning how green development standards result in better homes and neighborhoods.?

The seminar will also include a walking tour of Alys Beach to examine real-world applications such as innovative storm water treatments, energy-efficiency measures for coastal homes, solar panels and more. Seminar speakers will include Christian Wagley of Alys Beach, Jeff Allen of Stalwart Built Homes, Carl Roberts of EcoSmart Inc., Kendall Horne of Alys Beach, Teresa Howard of Gulf Power Company and Chandra Hartman of CFH Design Studio.

The seminar will be held from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Attendance is free, but pre-registration is requested. To RSVP, please e-mail events@alysbeach.com.

Starting at noon, children of all ages will enjoy many earth-friendly games and activities, including heating treats on a solar oven and an environmental scavenger hunt. From 2 p.m. until 4 p.m., guests can interact with turtles, toads and other local and exotic wildlife, courtesy of Nonie?s Ark Animal Encounter, while Mike Clark will share examples of 300-million-year-old fossils and crystals produced as a byproduct from a local quarry operation. Perpetual Imagination will also host a ?Hands on Ecology? learning class.

From 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., Fonville Press will serve a special lunch menu featuring local and organic foods. Guests will also be invited to kick the tires of a brand new Toyota Prius hybrid car. 30A-Radio 107.1 FM will provide afternoon music and entertainment.
