I don't think people realize just how nice our beaches are - the sparkling white sands of the "redneck riviera" are SO much nicer than the tiny pebbles or grey sand of the actual Riviera.

That is why any talk of offshore oil drilling is so completely appalling!

Wow that's bigtime! If only we had an international airport nearby. Check the link for the other destinations - pretty impressive list. Santiago de Cuba, Cuba; Florida Panhandle Beaches, USA; Hawaii, the Big Island, USA; Salta Province, Argentina; Mexico City, Mexico; Melbourne, Australia; Hanoi, Vietnam; Kerala, India; Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates; Tunisia; Copenhagen, Denmark; and the Isles of Scilly, England.

Like the Rodney Dangerfield of the American Southeast, Florida's panhandle never gets the respect it deserves. Dubbed the "Redneck Riviera" by dismissive northerners, northwest Florida, in fact, contains some of the most diverse recreation choices along Florida's drastically under-appreciated Gulf coast, and some of the best options for visitors seeking an affordable family vacation. From Destin to the west, where you can hire a fishing or sailing charter, to the smattering of National Seashores as you move east, there's really something for everyone. Seaside's planned community is so "perfect" it was the setting for the The Truman Show, yet you'll also find old-school Florida towns with funky shops, tiny hotels, pristine beaches, and the perfect cottage to rent.
"Stunning beaches, nature trails ... great restaurants, and a cozy, yet quirky, sense of community." -- Lesley Abravanel, author Frommer's Florida

I really doubt we would have received this mention if oil drilling was happening right offshore.

We are America's Riviera as "dubbed" by much earlier visitors or writers than this. Nice to get some notice. South Walton, Walton County is at the center of this most beautiful and diverse area. Curious why writer had narrow focus and didn't include from Pensacola to Appalachicola. Hope they visit SoWal.com and learn more about the treasures of the Emerald Coast and Northwest Florida. There is so much to write about, they probably struggled with where to start or what to include in a limited space.
