South Walton County home sustains a half-million dollars in damage
January 13, 2010 8:53 AM
Damage estimates have now been placed at more than a half-million dollars to a three-story, wood home under construction on Tupelo Street in the Seaside Beach community of South Walton County. The house itself, with a separate carriage house, is valued at approximately $4.8 million.
The Walton County Sheriff's Office continues to look for leads to the suspect, or suspects, who caused the damage on either the night of Dec. 17 or during the pre-dawn hours of Dec. 18.
At around 7 a.m. on Dec. 18, two workers arrived and found the front door standing open and water pouring in from the ceiling. Someone had plugged all the sinks in the home with either the stopper or with paper and turned the water on. The suspect also placed a board under the tub faucet to cause the water to run on to the floor.
The water seeped into the floors and into the ceiling separating the first and second floor. The water damaged the wood ceiling in the main living room, kitchen, dining room, basement, theater and electrical room. All the air ducts on the second floor and basement were filled with water. The water would pour from the ceiling and damage the electronics to the theater. The carriage house mechanical room also received thousands of dollars worth of damage.
The construction company building the house is offering a $5,000 reward leading to the arrest and conviction of those who may have caused the damage. If someone may have information on this case, contact Crime Stoppers of Walton County at 1-866-718-TIPS (8477), or the Walton County Sheriff's Office at 850-892-8111.
