Update
For the second time this year, a vehicle has gone off the area of the Clyde B. Wells Bridge and ended up in the bay. This time the driver was taken to the hospital, but did not live. The accident happened around 10:15am Monday as the male driver was traveling south on 331, then veered into the northbound lanes. The car drove off the roadway and into the water at the foot of the bridge, eventually becoming completely submerged. The driver was able to be rescued before the car went under, but later passed away at the hospital. A Walton County Sheriff’s Office Dive Unit was dispatched to look for any other occupants and to help retrieve the vehicle. It was determined there was no one else.

Thanks, Kurt. Sounds as if he had a medical emergency.

He must have really launched to get to water deep enough to cover the truck. You have to get quite a ways from the causeway to get to water that deep.

We drove by 30 minutes after it happened. Interesting that the Channel 4 people were there before a lot of the emergency vehicles got there. The water was very shallow. We had just noted how much sand could be seen in the bay and how calm the waters were right before we noticed the emergency vehicles and search boats. Very sad. I'll bet the cause was medical.
