WALTON COUNTY WILL BE ACCEPTING GRANDFATHER BEACH DRIVING PERMIT APPLICATIONS FROM JULY 20TH 2015 THROUGH AUGUST 21, 2015.

DeFuniak Springs, FL… On July 14, 2015 the Walton County Board of County Commissioners authorized a one-time renewal of 50 Grandfathered Beach Driving Permits. These permits are ONLY for individuals who qualify under the following amendment to the Walton Code of Ordinances 22-57 which states:
(C) Up to an additional 50 permits shall be issued for those individuals who held a valid beach access permit with an expiration date of June 1, 2009. Those individuals who held a valid beach access permit with an expiration date of June 1, 2009 and meet the requirements of subsection (e)(2) may submit applications between July 20, 2015 and August 21, 2015. Should more than 50 individuals submit applications between July 20, 2015 and August 21, 2015, a one-time lottery selection will be conducted by the county administration office on August 28, 2015 and all applicants will be notified of the results. Those selected in the lottery will have 20 calendar days to purchase permits from the county beginning August 31, 2015.

Those who fail to purchase their permit within the 20 days will forfeit their chance to obtain a grandfathered beach driving permit.

The Walton County Administration Department will begin taking applications on July 20th, 2015. The in-person submission deadline will be close of business on August 21st, 2015. Lottery applications will be available on the County’s website beginning July 20th at 12:01am through August 21st, at 11:59pm. Applications will not be accepted unless all eligibility requirements are met and all documentation is provided at the time of application. Incomplete applications will not be eligible to receive a permit.

We will not contact the applicant regarding missing, expired, incorrect or any other error that renders the applicant ineligible for the permit. You may contact Administration at 850-892-8155 to verify entry after submission.

So locals can't get a beach driving permit unless they win the lottery, and even lottery winners only get one for a year, but we're adding 50 grandfathered permits just for folks who used to have one?

Wouldn't it be fairer to just add 50 to the lottery?

Isn't it time to stop all driving on the beach including vendors, sheriff, and all. Except trash collection - I suppose they need a real truck. And permitted licensed fishing charters.
YES!

Let's go back to a Pristine Beaches reality. If we locals don't, as a community, show respect and reverence to the area's single most important physical asset, then who will?

Ban all chair vendors, sunset all driving permits. I can see the sheriff needing access though.

I think the beach driving at Grayton is one of the fun and funky things that makes our area unique.

However if people are truly concerned about beach driving I think limiting driving permits to Walton County residents, cracking down on beach driving by unpermitted vehicles (including vendors), and having the TDC Code Enforcement and Sheriff patrol on foot or by ATV would be a good compromise. Only trash pickup would drive all along the beach. That would drastically reduce the vehicle traffic.

Agree. I do love the fun and funky part on Grayton Beach. It's a tradition. But, it's limited to only certain people, and probably should be further limited to only full time residents. Annual lottery is maybe a good idea but doesn't seem feasible in the long run.
