Just a short update regarding the tropical low in the Gulf:
• The low pressure system over the south-central Gulf of Mexico, designated Invest Area 99L, is currently producing a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms that extends from western Cuba northward across the eastern Gulf of Mexico.
• The system is approximately 300 miles west of Key West and 400 miles south of Destin, Florida, and moving north-northeast near 11mph.
• The circulation associated with this system has become a little less defined since yesterday, and upper-level winds are not favorable for significant development.
• Due to the current disorganization of the system coupled with strong wind shear, the National Hurricane Center is giving Invest 99L a 30% (low) chance of formation over the next 2 days.
• The system is expected to move northward toward the northern Florida Gulf Coast over the next 24 to 36 hours, to the east of a broader non-tropical area of low pressure located over the western Gulf of Mexico near Texas.
• An Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter reconnaissance aircraft is on stand-by to investigate the system this afternoon if necessary.
Florida Outlook:
• The impacts of Invest 99L to Florida will largely remain the same regardless of whether or not it becomes a tropical cyclone.
• Impacts for the Florida Gulf Coast and Florida Keys will be felt through Tuesday night.
• This system could produce heavy rainfall over portions of the state, where 1-3 inches of widespread rainfall is possible over the next 3 days. Isolated amounts of up to 5-8 inches are also possible, especially near the coast.
• Most of the flooding concerns will be flooding of urban and low-lying areas as heavy rain may fall within a short time span. A Flash Flood Watch is in effect through Tuesday morning for the Florida Panhandle and Big Bend, with a Flood Watch in effect for the coastal counties of West Central Florida.
• Waterspouts and isolated tornadoes are also possible hazards with this system. The Storm Prediction Center has placed coastal areas from Pensacola to St. Petersburg in a marginal risk for severe weather today. Waterspouts were observed in the Florida Keys yesterday.
• Invest 99L will cause an increase in deadly rip currents along the Panhandle Coast through Tuesday or Wednesday.
• Breaking waves of 3 to 5 feet are possible along the Panhandle coast, with wave heights of 1-3 feet possible along the remainder of the Florida Gulf Coast.
• Tides along the Panhandle coast will also average about a foot above normal.
