Shunk Gulley Oyster Bar is a new restaurant coming to South Walton on Scenic 30A at Gulf Place. Scheduled to open in October 2017.
Shunk Gulley Liquor & Wine Store is now open just across the way at Gulf Place.
Shunk Gulley Oyster Bar
Shunk Gulley is under construction at the intersection of Hwy 393 and 30A across from Ed Walline Beach Access. The restaurant will feature classic coastal cuisine and genuine southern hospitality. Live music is planned daily inside the bar area, featuring 40 feet of panoramic views of the sugar white sand beach.
The restaurant and bar is named after the hard-to-find “shunk gulley” reef in the Gulf of Mexico. The intersection of Highway 393 and 30A served as a point of navigation for boaters along the coast. Fishermen would launch straight out from the current Ed Walline Beach Access to head to the reef. Rumor has it that this secretive reef was one of the top fishing locations in this part of the Gulf. Once used as a landmark for the legendary fisherman of South Walton, the new Shunk Gulley bar and restaurant hopes to be a mainstay for locals to gather, visitors to enjoy, all while we continue the legacy of conservation.
Shunk Gulley has teamed up with the South Walton Artificial Reef Association (SWARA) to bring back active fisheries in the Gulf. Helping build a more diverse ecosystem that is not only good for the Gulf, but good for your plate. Preserving the history of the area, new reef structures have been deployed in the Gulf and will carry the Shunk Gulley name. With an ongoing partnership with SWARA, more reef structure deployments are planned for the near future.
“Shunk Gulley will be a full service beach bar and restaurant with unbelievable Gulf views, food that is simple yet delicious and unbeatable service,” says General Manager, Kirk Williams. “Whether stepping off the beach, stopping by after work, or driving by on your family vacation, everyone will find something to love at Shunk Gulley.”
“You’re always welcome at the Shunk Gulley,” Williams adds. “We want this to become a staple of 30A for decades to come.”
Along with veteran restaurant manager Williams, Shunk Gulley will have Chef Tyler McMahan leading the oyster bar and coastal culinary inspired menu. Formerly of Cuvée Kitchen + Bar, Destin Restaurateur Chef McMahan is excited for a new challenge. “I want to hit the ground running with some familiar favorites as well as new takes on classic dishes,” McMahan says. “The goal is to create a menu that you want to come back any day of the week. Our menu, sourced with the freshest regional ingredients, will make you want to come back every day of the week.”
Shunk Gulley Oyster Bar is expected to open in October of 2017 and create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in South Walton.
