Local looking for a place for visiting family to stay in May. Not interested in paying the VRBO fees, would prefer to handle locally.

You might want to try Emerald Coast By Owner (ecbyo.com). There are no service fees and you work directly with the owner. How many people are you looking to house & in what area? We have a 2 bedroom, 2 bath in the Seacrest area and a 4 bedroom, 4.5 bath in Santa Rosa Beach.

You don't have to pay the VRBO service fee as long as you do NOT use the Book Online feature. Send an email inquiry via VRBO to the owner. Most owners will be happy to work with you and avoid the special fee.

That is possible. The risk there is that VRBO will "ding" the property owner if they have too many inquiries that do not convert to online reservations through VRBO. The more "dings", the farther down the search list you go and your listing goes into Never Never Land before you know it. That's a big deal as a property owner. If your listing does not appear on any traveler searches, you won't be seen. They pretty much hold our vacation rentals hostage. If you can avoid VRBO all together, that would be even better for all involved. Side note: VRBO does monitor the communication feeds. If there is any discussion of reserving outside the VRBO system, they have been known to pull the listing.
