Gulf World Marine Institute is releasing Mantis, a loggerhead sea turtle, into the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday, February 7th at 9:00 am across from the Carousel Supermarket in Panama City Beach.

The public is invited to attend this exciting event.

Mantis was found floating abnormally in the Gulf of Mexico behind Sharky’s Beachfront Restaurant on August 6th, 2018. Beach patrol recovered the animal on a jetski and Mantis was immediately brought to GWMI for rehabilitation. The sea turtle was lethargic, in poor body condition and had buoyancy control issues.

The animal was treated with antibiotics. The sea turtle has gained weight and is swimming and diving normally. Mantis has been medically cleared for release by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

GWMI would like to thank Beach Patrol and Beach and Surf Lifeguards for their valued partnership towards our mission. If you see a stranded or deceased dolphin, whale or sea turtle, please immediately report to Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission, 1-888-404-3922 or #FWC on your cell phone.
