Surfrider News

Surfrider chapters across the U.S. are gearing up for Hands Across the Sand on May 18th, 2019. Founded by Surfrider member Dave Rauschkolb ten years ago, the event brings people together to oppose new offshore drilling and other fossil fuel development and promote a clean energy future. The Surfrider Foundation is an official sponsor of Hands Across the Sand and our participation is a cornerstone of our Stop New Offshore Drilling campaign.

The event is particularly timely given the Trump administration's plans to drastically expand oil and gas development off our coastlines. Last year, the Department of Interior released a draft proposal to expand offshore drilling to over 90% of U.S. waters, putting the Atlantic, Pacific, Gulf of Mexico, and Arctic Ocean at risk of new oil rigs. With the next draft of the 5-year offshore drilling program expected soon, Hands Across the Sand provides a key opportunity to make our voices heard as the federal government evaluates what regions of the U.S. will be included.

The premise of Hands Across the Sand is simple: on May 18th at 12 p.m. local time people will join hands for 15 minutes on beaches and parks around the world to demonstrate support for protecting our coasts from oil and gas development and the need to transition to clean energy solutions. All events are organized locally by volunteers and the event website provides most of the resources that you will need.

So visit the Hands Across the Sand website today and sign up to organize or participate in a local event! With the federal government pushing to expand oil and gas development off our coasts, now is the time to join the grassroots movement to protect our coastlines from risky drilling practices!

With this years, 2019 Hands Across The Sand event coming on May, 18th I look back to 2010 shortly after Deepwater Horizon. Also, two months prior to that disaster over 10,000 Floridians joined hands on 80 beaches to influence the Florida Senate to abandon a companion bill to the House that would have opened our coastline and Florida's waters to offshore drilling. This issue is as important as ever and offshore drilling must stay far, far away from Florida's beaches. We must not allow for any dirty oil and gas industry infrastructure along any of our Florida coast either. Tourism and our clean pristine beaches are what keeps Florida's economic engine running not dirty fuels.

A Line in the Sand Over Offshore Drilling

By THE NEW YORK TIMES

JUNE 26, 2010

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — The first time Dave Rauschkolb staged a rally against offshore drilling with people holding hands across the beach outside his restaurant in Seaside, Fla., barely anyone noticed (Outside Florida).

Four months and a colossal oil spill later, the second Hands Across the Sand event held at noon on Saturday was nothing short of a worldwide movement.

In all, mainly through connections made through Facebook, 820 events were scheduled in all 50 states and in 34 countries. Thousands of people worldwide stood hand in hand — with some, here in South Beach at least, breaking the chain only for surfers or topless women — to protest drilling and to demand cleaner

energy sources.

“I believe every American and every person has a beach that they hold dear to their heart,” said Mr. Rauschkolb, 48, a lifelong surfer. “This resonates. It’s a very simple yet powerful statement for people to go to the beach and draw a line in the sand.”

He added: “This is not rocket science. Our basic message is no to offshore oil drilling and yes to clean energy. Why is it that it takes a disaster in the gulf of this magnitude to get our leaders to pay attention? They need to stop taking that oil money and listen to their constituents.”

A version of this article appears in print on June 27, 2010, on Page A16 of the New York edition with the headline: A Line in the Sand Over Offshore Drilling.

HANDS ACROSS THE SAND is a global annnual event
Philosophy of HANDS:
This is an opportunity of global importance. This is an opportunity for any person from all over the world to gather together and become active in helping to change our world energy policies to ensure a sustainable planet.

What are we trying to accomplish?
On a local, national and global level joining hands sends a powerful visual message of human solidarity.
Unified in the defense of the air we breath, the water we drink and the food we consume from dangerous, dirty energy sources.
Every time we join hands that message is reinforced.
A line in the sand is a powerful thing.
It’s simple and logical.

Embrace clean energy.

Floridian Dave Rauschkolb founded Hands Across the Sand/Land in October 2009. Hands Across the Sand/Land is sponsored by national environmental organizations including Oceana, Surfrider Foundation, Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, Sierra Club, Earth Ethics, Center for Biological Diversity, Another Gulf is Possible, Redfin and Gulf Restoration Network

10th annual Hands Across the Sand

We had a great turnout today for Hands Across the Sand at Inlet Beach. A gorgeous day. Saw old friends and met new ones. All enjoyed coming together for just a little while to join hands for clean energy. Today was about protecting our shores from offshore drilling but it really is more than that. It is about protecting our beaches and environment in Florida overall. Thank you community. Look for Kurt's SoWal photo gallery to be published soon.

How lucky are we to live here?

Today I got to meet a long time Facebook friend from Texas... Kristi. We have mutual friends and have been friends online for a few years now. She assured me that offshore drilling in Texas was a terrible thing to see. And that she wanted to show up today to participate in the Hands event. She's on vacation here with her husband celebrating their anniversary.
