Walton County Coastal Branch Library sponsors “Winter Community Programs” Wednesdays, Jan 8th – March 4th 2020 at 10:00 am. Winter Community Programs are designed for our adult community and families having educational and entertaining value while learning about our community and neighbors. Sponsored by Friends of Coastal Library.

Jan 8 | Film Screening Documentary – Southwest FL Mangrove Coast - Nic Stoltzfus and Elam Stolzfus
“Southwest Florida’s Mangrove Coast” is a documentary featuring the 40 year history of Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and displays the nature and beauty of southwest Florida. Produced by Emmy award-winning cinematographer Elam Stoltzfus, the film delves into the scientific work being done at Rookery Bay on mangroves, pythons, sea turtles, and other species. Land managers, scientists, and local partners discuss potential threats to the region as well as what is being done to protect southwest Florida’s mangrove coast for future generations.

Jan 15 | Songwriter Musician – Tanya Gallagher
Tanya Gallagher will speak and play music. A Pensacola, Florida native—who once interned for NASA—practices cartography, turning geographic information into maps for Santa Rosa County, where she resides.

Jan 22 | Historian - The Old East Pass and the Lighthouse Keepers
Destin historian and author Hank Klein tells the story of the OLD East Pass – the inlet from the Gulf of Mexico to Choctawhatchee Bay located at Destin, Florida.Learn about the lights that used to guide mariners into the old pass and the Destin fisherman who were its light keepers.

Jan 29 | Historian - Principal Harpist – Katie Ott
Katie Ott will give a performance and a brief history of the harp that will explain the evolution from the Egyptian lyre into the modern marvelous instrument we know and love today! Ms. Ott is Principal Harpist at Mobile Symphony Orchestra, Pensacola Symphony Orchestra and Principal Harpist at Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra.

Feb 5 | Walton County History with Story and Song
Ronnie McBrayer is author of Wild, Wild, Walton and Down by the Riverside. He will be speaking of local Walton County history with story and song. The beautiful sugar-white beaches of the Florida Panhandle are the result of erosion scientists say.

Feb. 12 | Author – Dr. Prudence Farrow Bruns
Prudence Bruns will speak and amaze the audience. Bruns studied Transcendental Meditation ™ with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in India at the same time as the Beatles. She was so dedicated to the practice, she locked herself in her room to focus. Her act inspired John Lennon to write a song encouraging her to come out and play called, “Dear Prudence”.

Feb. 19 | Bruce Collier as Winston Churchill
WINSTON CHURCHILL: THROUGH THE STORM, is a re-enactment written by Bruce Collier. He will share the highlights of the event taking place late in the evening of July 23, 1945 in Potsdam, Germany at the site of a summit conference of the victorious Allies and following the defeat of Nazi Germany, the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill has just hosted a banquet for U.S. President Harry Truman and Soviet Generalissimo Josef Stalin

Feb. 26 | Chick Huettel – History of Walton County Sheriff’s Posse
This presentation covers the early 1800’s up to today’s modern Posse history. It was a past of dedicated lawmen, coupled with violence and quick justice. The era of cattle rustling, lynching, thieves, killers and bootleggers comes to life in this slide presentation presented by members of the Walton County Sheriff’s Posse. This presentation is adult material.

March 4 | Ted Talk FSU Speakers – Erica Averion and Libby Fisher
Libby Fisher and Erica Averion don’t believe anyone wants to be known for the worst thing they have ever done. That is why they spend much of the margins of their life serving and working with those who have criminal backgrounds. Much of their service/work in the criminal justice arena is gaining ground in Florida as they strive to engage leaders in the stories and realities of Restorative Justice-Responsibility-Rehabilitation-and Reintegration that motivate us all to act justly, love tenderly and walk humbly.

South Walton Coastal Branch Library hosts year round events such as book sales, community programs and lectures, children's story time, chess, tai chi, meditation and other classes open to the community. Stop in to see works of a local artist on display each month.
