International Best-Selling Author Ryan Holiday will open the 2020 Florida Chautauqua Assembly on Friday, January 24 at Wise Educational Complex, 555 Walton Road in DeFuniak Springs, 9am. The 2020 theme of the 4-day educational program for families is “A Journey into the World of Happiness.” Tickets are $15, but select students, faculty and staff of the Walton County School District will be attending as guests of the Florida Chautauqua Association.

Tickets available at Florida Chautauqua Association headquarters, 1290 Circle Drive, DeFuniak Springs, Florida beginning Thursday, January 23, 10am-4pm and Friday, January 24 beginning at 7am. More info at www.FloridaChautauquaAssembly.org.

“We picked this theme because our world is so divided” Program Chair Christopher Mitchell says. “This is an opportunity for all of us to start the new year right by discovering ways to find our inner peace.”

The Florida Chautauqua Assembly is an annual, historic event featuring famous and notable keynote speakers, educational breakout sessions, performance teas, evening dinner performances and exhibits relating to an annual theme. In addition to Holiday’s presentation on Friday, Jan. 24, former Disney Executive Pamela Landwirth will speak on the power of giving selflessly at a place like Give Kids The World Village in Kissimmee, Florida where she is currently president and CEO. The Village is an 83-acres resort for children with critical illnesses whose dream is to meet Mickey Mouse and/or to visit all of the magical theme parks central Florida has to offer. This is the place the Make-A-Wish and other wish-granting organizations send children throughout the world who has this wish.

Ryan Holiday’s presentation will set the tone of the Assembly by introducing attendees to the concept of Stoicism. Few writers have done more to bring ancient, timeless wisdom and cutting-edge marketing strategies together than Ryan Holiday. By age 31, his philosophically-driven bestselling books have not only sold nearly two million copies, but they've directly influenced Super Bowl-winning teams like the New England Patriots, World Series champions like the Houston Astros and Olympic Gold Medalists, as well as sitting Senators, military leaders and some of the biggest and most important companies in the world like Google, Twitter and Microsoft.

At the core of Ryan’s teachings is Stoicism, a philosophy he has brought back from ancient Rome and into the workplace, entrepreneurship, politics, and sports. What is Stoicism? The idea that while we don’t always control what happens to us in life, we always control how we respond. It’s this message--a framework for overcoming obstacles, scaling new challenges and battling both the ups and downs and life, illustrated vividly with stories from the greats (and not-so-greats) of history--that has brought Ryan in front of some of the most influential audiences in the world. He’s been profiled by the New York Times, Sports Illustrated and ESPN, and he counts among his clients and followers, some of the biggest names in business, tech, culture and professional athletics.

With a thirst for knowledge outside academic norms, after dropping out of college, Ryan’s marketing career has been equally groundbreaking. Beginning at 21 as the Director of Marketing for American Apparel and through his creative agency, Brass Check, his clients consist of a who's who of hot brands and businesses. His book Trust Me I’m Lying was the first to reveal the massive vulnerabilities (and opportunities) in the global media system in 2012. His book Growth Hacker Marketing is a bible for startups and Fortune 500 companies alike. Both books are taught in colleges and design programs around the world and his recent book, Conspiracy, is being adapted into a major motion picture.

Holiday is also author of Ego is the Enemy, The Daily Stoic, Stillness is the Key and The Daily Stoic Journal. He also hosts “The Daily Stoic” on YouTube. The first 50 people to purchase passports to the entire event (money-saving book of tickets) for $150 will receive a complimentary hard-back copy of Stillness is the Key. Holiday will sign any book he has authored immediately following his presentation.

For tickets or passports, contact the Florida Chautauqua Association at (850) 892-7613 or visit www.FloridaChautauquaAssembly.org.

Exhibits are free and open to the public during Florida Chautauqua Assembly 2020

Take a step back in time by exploring the many vintage-era camping trailers built in the 1950's and 60's. Owners of these restored and/or carefully preserved relics invite you to see inside their campers on display during the weekend-long Florida Chautauqua Assembly in DeFuniak Springs, Florida beginning Friday, January 24 through Sunday, January 26, 2020. They invite you to view their lovingly refurbished 1940-60s era trailers and to learn about the lifestyle of the campers who originated the Tin Can Tourists club in 1919. Free Admission. 3 Circle Drive, DeFuniak Springs, FL. (850) 892-7613 or visit www.FloridaChautauquaAssembly.org.

Many other free living history exhibits are available to explore in Chipley Park that same weekend:

Cannon blasts, turpentine demonstrations, native American storytelling, an indoor nature trail, a vintage camper show, a Civil War and Florida Frontiersmen Settlement Camp, Black History presentations, a tree give-away, and many other living history exhibits, demonstrations and presentations will be in full swing Friday, January 24 through Sunday, January 25 at Chipley Park, 3 Circle Drive in DeFuniak Springs, Florida. These events and parking are free and compliment the activities of the annual, historic Florida Chautauqua Assembly taking place during the weekend. The free exhibits in Chipley Park are sponsored by the City of DeFuniak Springs.

The Walton Guard’s Civil War Camp and Battle Reenactments return to educate and “wow” visitors of all ages with educational presentations and battle reenactments. Civil War interpreters will portray life on and off the battlefield Saturday, January 25 at 12:30 while Sunday at 1:30 p.m. the Battle at Eucheanna will be depicted. Sunday’s battle will be the first time in recent history that the essence of this local history will be dramatized.

The Florida Forest Service and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Indoor Nature Trail, which will be located behind the historic Hall of Brotherhood at 95 Circle Drive, is best known for the interactive nature of their display. Adults and children will find “things to do” and “places to explore” set up inside the large tent where a contingent of rangers, foresters and 4-H representatives will be on hand with explanations and information about the exhibits.

Interpreters of the Florida Frontiersmen Settlement Camp will depict life on the Florida Frontier in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Visitors spend time looking at the unique collection of quilts, enjoy watching live cooking demonstrations and sometimes even get to taste the delicacies cooked on an open fire.

New to these many free exhibits which families covet from throughout NW Florida is Turpentine Demonstrator Ramsey Kent who will share his knowledge of this industry which was an economic engine for northwest Florida in its early history. Mr. Ramsey’s demonstrations take place Friday and Saturday, 8am-5pm.

The Walton County Heritage Museum generously invites the public to meander into their building to see the colorful and informative displays explaining the history and founding of the town of DeFuniak Springs and the development of the county on Friday and Saturday.

Visitors walking around Chipley Park will see Plein Air artists dotting the landscape as they choose vignettes to capture on their palettes and can later buy their works of art (still wet) later in the day at a “Wet Paint” sale at nearby Hotel DeFuniak, 400 East Nelson Avenue.

The Tin Can Tourists Vintage Campers will circle the drive with the classic restored campers of the 1950’s and 1960’s. Peeking inside one of these is a trip back in time when the pace of life was slower and more deliberate as families explored America.

A free art show is scheduled a few blocks away from Chipley Park at the DeFuniak Springs Community Center where visitors will enjoy a display of our region’s artistic talent and will learn some techniques from our area’s art experts who will be demonstrating their craft and selling their wares (art, quilts and ceramics) Friday and Saturday, Jan. 24-25, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., at the Community Center, 361 N. 10th Street.

While many of the exhibits are open Friday, Saturday and Sunday during the Assembly, some events and displays will only be up one day only:

The public is invited to meet Pam during the brief ceremony. Mayor Clayton of Give Kids The World is coming, too! He is the adorable and lovable storybook character at the Village who tucks these special children in at night during their week-long, cost-free vacation at the Village made possible by the Make-A-Wish Foundation and other wish-granting organizations.
