    Sandestin Triathlon August

I've done this triathlon about a dozen times, starting in 1989. At that time it was called the Elephantwalk Triathlon. Although I haven't participated in a few years, I always thought it was a well run event. Its basically flat on both the run and bike. (In the early years, the run...

    Ike

Thanks for posting this info. It seems that since NOLA was "relatively" unscathed by Gustav, the national media lost interest in the other areas of Louisiana that were hit particularly hard. EBR had sustained winds of 62 mph (higher than Betsy) and gusts in excess of 100 mph. Many, many...

    Pancetta!

Friday I'm making a favorite dish of our family: linguine with shrimp and asparagus in a pancetta cream sauce. :D Does anyone know where I might find pancetta in SoWal?? I couldn't find any at the Publix at Grand Boulevard. While getting the shrimp at Shrimper's, I found some really nice...

SoWal Favorites - What's the best meal in SoWal?

The "last" best meal I had was the fish tacos at Hurricanes. I also really like that quirky cucumber salad they serve. The absolute very best salad (altho technically not in SoWal) I've had was the antipasto plate at the late, great Tony's in Destin Commons. :(

Bell Peppers with Faux Dirty Rice Stuffing

Great local produce of all kinds are now available in the Gulf South. In Red Stick, we are getting some really big green bell peppers. I've always enjoyed stuffed peppers, but found many of the traditional recipes to be rather bland. This recipe from the Baton Rouge Advocate is "kicked up a...

    Gumbo Tales

If you love New Orleans, and if you love food, and in particular, if you love Noo Awlins food, you will enjoy Gumbo Tales by Sara Roahen. I just bought some great food that I can't eat

The Omnivore's Dilemma is an excellent book. I still eat meat, even the occasional industrial burger, but Pollan's experiences will make you think. Another excellent book that touches on some of the same issues as the Omnivore's Dilemma is Heat by Bill Buford.

    Reasonably priced seafood in Destin

Louisiana Lagniappe is back in Louisiana. After selling the Destin location in 2004-05 they returned to Baton Rouge and continue to serve fantastic seafood here. :D I would avoid any chain that admits to operating Pompano Joe's. Buster's! Probably the worst oysters in the SoWal...

    Fresh Seafood Go To...

SoWal/Okaloosa is lucky to have a number of good sources. :D I patronize Shrimper's, Sexton's, Destin Ice, and Skipper's. Shrimper's usually has black mussels, which the other three do not. Sexton's generally has the largest selection of fresh fish. Destin Ice has some nice prepared foods...

jul & jpbhen... Thanks for the feedback. :D What about the fat? The reason I browned the chuck first was to render out the fat before adding the other ingredients. Do you scoop the fat off the top of the chili as it simmers?

I had never heard of Cincinnati Chili (even though growing up in Pennsylvania) until Joe Kernan discussed it on CNBC a year or so ago. Fresh Market coming to Pier Park (unofficially)

No olive bar at the Grand Sandestin Publix, just prepacked. I am an olive fiend :yikes: and the "bar" at Destin Fresh Market is very good with maybe 12-15 selections. I am apparently in the minority, but I think there are some things The Fresh Market does better the Whole Foods. Meats and...

Unfortunately so true! :( Our first property in Sandestin was a townhome in Beachwalk. We put it in the rental program and the first year (1998) grossed over $25K. When we sold the unit in early 2004, gross rental revenue had fallen to about $12K.
