Wonderful family vacation...discouraged by beach issues

That was my neighborhood walkover during my 11 years in SoWal. I'm glad I got out before the greed won out. If I were spending several thousand dollars to rent a vacation house, I'd be truly cheesed off. Not to mention never coming back.

Hampton Inn Seagrove Beach on Chateau Hotel Property

So, is there a news story with any detail? All I find are the short summaries at the Walton Sun and NWF Times. Are any of the BCC willing to be quoted?

Dune lake DVD for sale yet?

I'm looking forward to getting a DVD of the Elam Stoltzfus dune lake film. Is it on sale now? If so, who is stocking it in SoWal?

    Restaurant, cafe, coffee joint suggestions...

In hindsight, after 11 years as a recently departed local, in no particular order: Stinky's, Café 30A, La Loba, Bud and Alleys rooftop bar, Basmati.

Hampton Inn Seagrove Beach on Chateau Hotel Property

Don't forget this - Hampton is a pretty nice chain, but it's quite common when a hotel gets 10-15 years old for it to get converted into one of the chains further down the food chain. I've seen this happen to a number of Hamptons. Don't know the specifics, but I'd expect they hold their...

Hampton Inn Seagrove Beach on Chateau Hotel Property

I hope someone from Brown St. gets in on this when it gets discussed at the county commission. Brown St. flooded for 3 months in 2013, and again in April of 2014. This was not a routine runoff issue - it was the first time any of the long-term residents there could remember. Both the county and...

Which restaurant has the very best fried oysters?

Stinky's knows how to fry. It's also the only place at the beach to get catfish. Which is good, because they do catfish well.

Construction on "Swampy" Lot on South Lake Drive

I used to live near there. This construction could be big trouble in the future. Over 20 years ago, someone filled in a swampy area on my former street. We had major flooding this spring and all last summer as a result.

    Need Movers

I'll second the recommendation for Professional Moving Service in Ft. Walton. They packed our truck in May. The two man crew took good care of our stuff and loaded as quickly as the three man crew (from another company at our destination away from SoWal) that unloaded us. They are busy, though...

    30A Radio?

It's not a problem on your end, UofL. It won't stream for me, either. You'd think they would be interested in hearing that. When I lived near Eastern Lake, I had to stream to get it there - wouldn't even reach from Seaside.

After 11 years, we've packed the moving van and driven off into the sunset. Literally. It's been a lot of fun (or as the SoWal forum oldtimers useta say, "funn"). In no particular order, I'll miss: -My home beach near Eastern Lake -The daily air show, courtesy of Eglin and Tyndall...

    Recommend a moving service?

Anybody care to share a recommendation for a moving service? By the time of the move, I will have done the bulk of the packing myself. Everything will then need to get loaded in the truck, moved out of town, and unloaded at the destination. Not sure yet whether I will hand it over as a...

    Anyone have T-mobile in Sowal?

About a month ago, Sprint was having significant long-term problems with their cell located on top of One Seagrove Place. It was bad enough that I left them after 15 years. I'm on Verizon now and couldn't be happier. Bill is the same as we paid Sprint, coverage is better, and 4G data will blow...

    Cell service reliability

If you go to Verizon, go to the store, don't just do it online. The switchover process took some attention from a tech. I'd have hated to be trying to go it on my own.

    Cell service reliability

I was on the cell that's on top of one of the high-rises in Seagrove, can't remember which. That's the cell with the problem. Anybody need a few Euros?

I've got about 92 Euros. You can have them for the current exchange rate of 0.73 E = $1.00 which works out to $125 in round figures. That'll keep you from getting nicked about 18% at the airport exchange, so you'll come out over 20 bucks ahead. Not going back in the near future, so I'll be...

New Candidate for School Board District 5

I don't get it. Why have they chosen to drop him into Walton Co., of all places? Are they running out of vulnerable school districts to target? Or is it a training mission - if you can succeed where they've got a well-regarded public system, we'll promote you to the big time.

Golf Carts on the Roads in SoWal

Regardless of what the insurance companies may or may not currently be saying, my personal preference is clear. If I'm in a golf cart that is involved in a collision with a car or truck, I expect to come out on the losing end, probably in a dramatic and unpleasant sort of way. It's simple...

Golf Carts on the Roads in SoWal

I disagree with RD. The stretch near Deer Lake needs to go faster, not slower. It's safe to 50 MPH. Don't inconvenience everyone for the benefit of the relatively few vacationers who actually rent a golf cart and the even fewer vendors who rent them.

    'Private Beach' sign in Seagrove

tsutcli, I wonder how many of these folks that post these signs are motivated by bring tired of cleaning up after inconsiderate vacationers versus how many of them are simply saying "this is mine and you can't use it"? I'll go for the latter, although I tend toward profanity when provoked, and might refer to them as a two syllable (or is it hyphenated?) word meaning rear-facing bodily orifice.

    Cell service reliability

And it's nothing peculiar to our house. We've had good service here for the 10 years we lived here. Then this started 3 weeks ago. And, we can drive across Eastern Lake to a spot near the Old Florida Fish House (on the same cell tower) and get the same results as at home.

It's an Android, Local. Thanks for the tip, but that's not it: 1-We can stand in the living room, phones in hand, with 4 bars and 3G, and call each other. It's not the phone. I only have problems at home. And, it's not a weak signal. I can make outbound calls without any problems. Never roaming, always 3G and 3 to 5 bars. Cell service reliability

Kurt, it doesn't appear to be a phone problem. Happens to both of us, but only when we're on the local cell tower that serves the Eastern Lake area. Inbound calls work fine elsewhere. Yikes! Glad you mentioned spring break, Kurt. I'd completely forgotten about that. I haven't had any problems during break in the past. My problems now aren't lack of service, it's just incoming calls don't work about 1/2 the time.

Escape to Create 2014 Season at The Seaside Repertory Theatre JAN - FEB

Last night's performances at the Rep were special. Jeannette Andrews' magic charmed, and no locals were needlessly sawed in half. Mark Lowrey is an especially good jazz pianist, with a remarkable command of the instrument. Both were a real treat.

    New Speed Limit Signs

Changing 45 to 40 in the stretch from Deer Lake to Watersound is simply unneeded. Nothing but pine trees through there. 35 was fine through the stretch from Watersound to Alys, too, even in heavy season. Water leak gushing - who does property mgmt for Summers Edge/Chelsea Loop

Well, 10 posts ago, I was trying to take the quick route to the property mgmt folks, since they'd already be in the habit of maintaining property in the development, and have the owners' consent too. The LLC is out of state, not on Sunbiz.

Water leak gushing - who does property mgmt for Summers Edge/Chelsea Loop

Well, I wouldn't have thought of that. Didn't expect that Regional Utilities would turn off someone's water at the request of someone other than the account holder. Likewise, I know how to turn it off myself, but didn't for the obvious reasons related to messing with a stranger's stuff. If it...

Water leak gushing - who does property mgmt for Summers Edge/Chelsea Loop

Well, at the moment, it's moot. Whoever does the property management comes around early on garbage pickup day (that's today for our neighborhood) and puts the trash cans on the curb. They must have found it and turned off the service at the curb, because it's not gushing now.
