    Minimum Wage for SoWal???

Here's the deal. Investors don't care about affordable housing. Second home owners don't care about affordable housing. People who vacation here cook shrimp, make sandwiches, sit on the beach and go back to their home where there is affordable food, housing, things to do, etc. How many people...

    Minimum Wage for SoWal???

I agree with Shelly on this one. Most of the larger business owners in the resort related service industry will tell you that employment is the absolute number one problem they're concerned with down the road. Not real estate prices or tourism, but finding the employees to clean, landscape...

    Sunset of Black Creek

Sunset of Black Creek The tall bird with the long beak stands beneath the cypress each day. Nearby, the old boathouse sits alone on the bank of the narrow black river, covered in briar and moss, a slow fading rumor of the distant past spread by the soft rythmic whispers of clanking brown tin...

    Wishes for 2006

Wishes for 2006 A really bad year is behind us, and it's not one many will miss. Aside from both the world's worst natural disaster and our nation's worst manmade disaster, we've seen the pope die, the Dukes of Hazzard made into a movie, and thanks to Hurricane Dennis unearthing Gulf Trace's...

    The Beauty of Impracticality

The 2005 hurricane season has thankfully ended and William Gray, the Nostradamus of hurricane forecasting, is calling for another active season of storms next year, leaving many realtors and property owners wondering what effects the big swirlies will have on the local real estate markets (I...

    It's A Small World...

On a trip to Disney World?s Magic Kingdom with some friends a couple of years ago, I made my usual pilgrimage to ?It?s a Small World? ? a smarmy, but iconic ride that reminds me of my trips to the park as a child. As we floated along in our boat watching crudely mechanical children in various...

    Last Days of Disco

I moved to South Walton in 2000 because I bascially grew up down here and liked it. In fact, I left a successful career just to do it. It's not "just a beach" to me, it's been my home - an attachment based more on friends, childhood memories, family history and familiarity than simple...

    Last Days of Disco

The Last Days of Disco Yes, the market has slowed. Someone turned on the lights. It appears that the insane, real estate party days of the early millennium are fading like Studio 54 into a new era of moderation. Some realtors and short-term investors are seeing giant spiders as their systems...

    Oysters Rockefeller For Humanity

I guess this was the wrong audience to mention my plan. I hadn't intended to get into a debate on whether or not New Orleans should be rebuilt - though I do have an opinion I express in the next issue of Coastal Homes and Lifestyles. I get it - Aquatic, Joe aren't particularly interested.

    Oysters Rockefeller For Humanity

Below is a long, recent article about Antoine's in New Orleans from the Washington Post. I've been kicking around the idea of trying to pull together an interested group of foodies who may disagree on whether or not Antoine's food lives up to its reputation, but agree that regardless it's still...

    young people

There are young professionals, most of whom are realtors. South Walton is a small place, so it will be easy to get to know them. We need more - so welcome.

    Franchises and Chains

There doesn't appear to be a boom in small business in South Walton because it's so expensive to get started. Maybe it's selfish, but it would be nice to be able to drive through and get a 4.00 Wendy's every now and then - here's a novel idea, maybe even have a pizza delivered? I hear they do...

    Ritz-Carlton

I think it would be a good thing. South Walton really changed several years ago. I've run into a lot of people who've only been coming here since the early nineties, and don't really know the way things "used to be." The irony is that most of these people are mourning the loss of what was...

    New Orleans Real Estate Boom?

We've already been contacted by two people asking if we were interested in selling our place in the FQ - both were NO real estate agents. Probably some good short-term gains possible. Who knows about long-term. Nice rental property should be a good investment, say in the Marigny, FQ, CBD.

They both have elderly parents (who have also lost their homes and still haven't been able to go back an attempt to salvage anything because they're still under some water). Putting a face with the need...

I'm not sure. Each family has a number of relatives living with them. The problem isn't really that they want to be together and can't - it's that he's trying to support his family until he can get back to his job or find one. He wants to return to New Orleans if he can.

Putting a face with the need...

May of our friends have given to the Red Cross, etc. but have also felt a little frustrated that they don't know of specific people that they can help who've been displaced by the storm. One of the people we've gotten to know after we bought our home in the French Quarter was a 42 year old...

    Housing for Katrina victims

Millions of people have had to evacuate areas in south Mississippi and New Orleans and won't be able to return to what's left of their homes for possibly weeks. New Orleans isn't accessible from the east at all and probably won't be for quite sometime - it's continuing to flood and power...

    Hurricane Katrina - III

As I understand it, New Orleans has more sites on the National Historic Registry than any city, including Boston. Here's a possible bright side.....

And it's the massiveness of it all. Ivan was horrible, but taking that misery and its multipliers is heartbreaking for me. Here, it seems we've all been so caught up in real estate and appreciation and old vine reds that we're close to losing our souls (I'm counting myself too). Here's a...

    Here's a possible bright side.....

I still want to encourage everyone to put some of this real estate money to a good cause - the Red Cross. If you give, let us know so it will encourage more to do so. And thanks, Joe. If he can get out, I'll keep it in mind.

    Here's a possible bright side.....

Spoke with a neighbor of ours, Michael, about thirty minutes ago. He's 21, delivers food by bicycle for the Verti Mart, a small deli in the French Quarter. He has no car, rents a small apartment and has no way to leave. He's been in line to get into the Super Dome for over three hours - part...
