Agree with most of this - but the only time I went to Old Bay, the seafood was all food-service frozen.

    Destin Restaurant Suggestions...

We had our first meal at Louisiana Lagniappe this year, and it was awful. Even the grouper was pre-made/frozen with the crust on it. But our friends who dragged us there absolutely love it. Go figure.

    Destin Restaurant Suggestions...

We enjoyed meals at Christiano's on 98 (just east of the 30A turnoff) and at Stewby's in Fort Walton Beach, during our February visit. If you like The Red Bar but find it too crowded, you might enjoy Louis Louis, on 98 just west of Christiano's, owned by the same family and very similar vibe and...

    Christiano's!

We enjoyed two lovely dinners at Christiano's on our February trip and deemed them "best new find" (barely edging out Stewby's). Fresh fish and delicious shrimp.

    Has anyone tried Bentley's?

Honestly, our experience in February was poor and I cannot recommend this place. However, there is a "Bentley's" thread somewhere here on Sowal.com, and a few others reported better experiences than mine. From everything I'm reading, you might want to try Edward's (which opened after we left)...

    Casual dining

If you are willing to drive to Destin, Tightlines was excellent for fish sandwiches, and though we didn't have oysters there, others on the TripAdvisor forum have spoken highly of them for raw oysters. There is also Boathouse Oyster Bar, 288 Harbor Blvd, Destin, FL 32541, 850-837-3645 - we...

    723 Whiskey Bravo in Seagrove

Dawn, I completely understand what you are saying. In the past, reviewers would deliberately wait 6-10 weeks before visiting new restaurants for that exact reason. The explosion of social media, such as this site, has changed that. I think most people would agree that if a restaurant is open...

Fun Playing With Food 2012 Trip Report

Thank you Joyce. I am all about the Fun With Food part, and I hate to say negative things about anyone. But unfortunately, in order to have credibility (not every place is always fantastic), I have to be honest. I expect that we will visit most of the places we visited this year again at some...

    Just A Simple Local Cafe

LOL Beachmouse - we'd already planned to get to Stewby's per another locals recommendation. Came so close to finally meeting you in person, we just got back from a late Stewby's lunch. Folks - Stewby's really is all that and a bag of chips (a heap of spiced french fries, actually). Fresh...

    Restaurant Fire is excellent!

Had it been just the two of us, we certainly would havespoken up. But with six of us, and the inordinately long time the entrees took (which no doubt played a part in the temp/overcooked issues), we did not. BTW - I'd definitely eat there again. But I can't agree with the OP because our...

    Restaurant Fire is excellent!

Disagree again. I chose them for our "bigger ticket" meal with 4 friends because of both prior good experiences and reputation. They weren't very crowded and our server was excellent. Appetizers were also impressive (though the oysters were a bit overpriced), but as you'll see when I post the...

    Restaurant Fire is excellent!

I have to disagree. Valentines Day was not up to snuff. Some plates served cold and my husband's grouper was way overcooked, then served cold. And $15 for a 3 oyster appetizer? I was underwhelmed, especially at $26+ a plate. And they were not very crowded.

Henry - we are looking forward to getting back to Shorty's this year; we have not been since 2010. I have a question about the menu, which I just looked at thanks to the link you posted. Gravel Road? All You Can Eat?

Respectfully, Ron (and I believe we spoke with you in February, because this is the same story we were given by the manager during our February 17th lunch visit for the fish fry - that a metallic taste is sometimes "natural" in shrimp and that therefore there was nothing wrong with anything that...

Are there any good places to eat on Okaloosa Island?

I have read so many accolades for La Famiglia, and I have only eaten there once, during the winter, so please take this comment in that context. The time we ate there, none of the fish or seafood was fresh/local, it was all food service and old at that. Other folks around us who ordered...

Are there any good places to eat on Okaloosa Island?

We visited this restaurant twice in the last two years, and I'm quite sure that the French Chef is gone, though they are still using his recipes. Our experiences were a mixed bag; here is my report as posted on my blog Fun Playing With Food (go to the blog to see the photos): The Bay Cafe, 233...

Gravel Road? All You Can Eat?

It's kind of hard to describe, though I know it when I smell it because it is distinctive. It is especially distinct from other bad smells we might associate with fish or seafood, such as ammoniation (which occurs as fish ages past it's prime) or "fishiness." It is more of a soapy-chemically...

Gravel Road? All You Can Eat?

Our experience with it in February 2011 was that only one of the two fin fishes served was fresh and local - everything else on the plate was food service pack (I expected the catfish to come from a farm someplace, but not the shrimp and crab, which both smelled of sodium tripolyphosphate and...

have someone coming next week who loves sushi...I'm not a fan, so have no idea

I just read the OP again - and here's another reason why you'll like Marie's - while the sushi is divine - everything else they make (that I've tasted) was also divine, from fish tacos, to shrimp and pasta, to soup - all made from scratch and delicious. So you will both be happy!

    bad experiences eating out

Is it possible that the lettuce wasn't washed and had a pathogen on it? Many restaurants are lax in washing lettuce, especially for sandwiches. Could have just been luck of the lettuce draw.
