Question: What would you love to have in SoWal?

I think I did buy some origami paper there once - great little shop - but I'm hoping for something with more selection someday. I will certainly go back, though.

Question: What would you love to have in SoWal?

I've loved this place dearly even when we had "nuthin" around, but, since you asked.... 1. Trolley to and along 30A 2. Art supply store, like Utrecht or Dick Blick (with more studio art supplies than Michael's) 3. European-style sauna (not just a dinky little one in a gym where people go in...

Schools Rely Too Much on Test Scores by DeLene Sholes

Tests like FCAT measure specific skill sets, instead of general knowledge. IMO, these were designed to be tools for assessment (curriculum and general trends in student data, indicators of student needs) instead of achievement tests - which is how they are being utilized. By the way, FCAT is...

Schools Rely Too Much on Test Scores by DeLene Sholes

Yes - it will be true soon, according to recent FL legislation - no matter if they teach any of the tested subjects or grade levels or not (art, music, kindergarten, PE, teachers, etc). Teachers are already under intense pressure about these. Trust me, they are not fans of the big build-up...

    Homemade salsa?

Basically, you just need chopped up tomatoes, onions, jalapenos (remove the seeds to be not-hot), a little cilantro, and lime juice (or vinegar). Let it sit for a while for the flavors to "marry." That's it! :) Of course, there are endless variations. Just DO NOT touch your hands to your eyes...

In DFS, you can try the Alford's produce stand on Hwy 90, or Southeby's antiques store has a farmer's market on Fridays. There's also the Little Big Store.

Bay parents request teacher rehires at WCSB

Thank you to all of the parents working to maker our schools better! On paper, it may look like we can afford all of the technology that we need. In practice --- I teach in a school (in Walton County) where about 1/3 of classrooms have active boards or projectors. Meanwhile, part of our annual...

Bay parents request teacher rehires at WCSB

Amaretto, believe me --- you're preaching to the choir! I'm also on annual contract.... I was trying to provide information to those who are unfamiliar to the process.

Bay parents request teacher rehires at WCSB

Technically, the school district does not have to provide any reason at all when not renewing an annual contract. There is no due process for teachers who are not on "continuing" or "professional" contract. Thanks to the new law just passed, this will become the new norm for teachers who have...

    New Emerald Coast Middle School

It was in September. I would have also attended if I had known about it before. You can find a photo slide show by following this link: The New ECMS I saw an article online from the Walton Sun (I think), but can't seem to find it now. I then surfed over to the ECMS site.

New ECMS update? HI --- Did anyone here take the open house tour of ECMS? If so, was there in fact an art studio, or space for art classes? I did a forum/thread search but did not find anything. Thanks!

    Re-introductions --- finally here!

Hi everyone. I've been a member for a while but slacked off because it made me sad that I couldn't get a job here. Well, now I have! I'm here - yea! I'm actually in "NoWal" - but at least I'm in the right county! I've started my new job and Mr. GG is working on getting the house sold in...

Male Indigo Bunting at my feeder today

Very neat! I have yet to see one here south of Houston. We do have Yellow-crested Night Herons nesting in the trees in our neighborhood. A few months ago we also had some Great Horned Owls who nested in a tree in our yard - my favorite!

Yes, let's talk about your snake photos. I'm not really a big scaredy cat when it comes to snakes, but your photos flipped me out!!!! Last Day of School in Walton County...

No teacher that I know of (including me and all of my immediate family-all teachers) wants a year round school! Of course, we're not in any unions. For those who are really quality educators, I just see burnout becoming more of a possibility. Summer is a time to regroup, rest, and do our own...

    Code Words

I really dislike the old boy network, in all of its forms. But please be respectful of those of us who are "natives" - the "first cousin" comment and "family tree like a pencil" are going a little far. I also detest the idea that all "newcomers" are to blame for all problems in Walton County...
