Back to Nature Festival Update!

The Beaches are Moving!

October 19 | Back to Nature Festival Guided Beach Walks and more!

The beaches of northwest Florida are forever in motion, ebbing and flowing with wind, waves, and tides. Join the South Walton Community Council at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park for a fun walk to explore the forces that shape the shoreline, build and destroy dunes, bring sand ashore and provide habitat for a fascinating variety of plants and animals. Along the way we’ll sample the beach sands, look for shorebird habitat, and see how a few hardy plants have adapted to the harsh conditions. Learn about beach features like cusps, ridges and runnels, overwash fans, the value of seaweed, and the issues presented as buildings crowd the dynamic shoreline and beach nourishment threatens the natural order of the beach.

The South Walton Community Council is presenting two guided beach walks as part of its Back to Nature Festival on October 19[SUP]th[/SUP] at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park. At8:30AM, Emily Ellis, a certified Florida Master Naturalist, will lead a tour focusing on bird life, shore bird habitat and other nesting species. At 10:00AM, Christian Wagley, who holds a master’s degree in biology/coastal zone studies and has spent over 20 years studying beaches along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts will lead the beach ecology tour. Trams to the walk site leave 15 minutes prior to the scheduled walk.

SWCC has a host of activities scheduled at Topsail Hill all day long on October 19[SUP]th[/SUP]. Visit the South Walton Community Council (SWCC) website for a full description of festival activities which include sunrise meditation, guided kayaking and hiking, face painting and animal encounters by Nonie’s Ark. Support your community and its natural environment while helping the SWCC. The SWCC is an organization of residents, business owners and property owners whose mission is to advocate for the preservation, protection and enhancement of the quality of life and natural environment of south Walton County. To contact the SWCC call (850) 314-3749 or visit its website at www.southwaltoncc.org.
