Firefighters responded to a 200 to 300 acre wildfire northeast of Black Creek on Wednesday, June 27. Walton 911 received the call at about 12 noon. Units from the Florida Division of Forestry, Walton Fire Rescue, and Freeport Volunteer Fire responded.
The fire occurred northeast of the area burned by the May 7 Black Creek fire; north of County Road 3280 and southeast of Burnham Road, a small road off State Road 20 east of Freeport. The area is largely vacant forest land.
The fire was brought under containment by 3:20 p.m., and the Walton County units were released. Florida Division of Forestry crews remain on the scene to overhaul the area and guard against a restart. There were no injuries and no damage to structures in this fire.
The Walton County burn ban enacted by the Board of County Commissioners on May 22 remains in effect. Walton residents and visitors are urged to continue to be extremely careful with fire. Particularly during the coming Fourth of July holiday, extra care should be taken with fireworks, barbeques, and other celebrations that may cause a fire. Despite some rain in recent days, many areas of the county are still very dry.
