The idea behind this is that we buy things we do not need, do not wear most of the clothes in our closets, and that others don't pay as much attention to our clothes as we think.

NYT: Closet ?diet?: Living on just six clothing items - The New York Times - TODAYshow.com

These women chose 6 apparel pieces (undies and shoes don't count, just major items) and wore them for a month.

This self-imposed exercise in frugality was prompted by a Web challenge called Six Items or Less (sixitemsorless.com). The premise was to go an entire month wearing only six items already found in your closet (not counting shoes, underwear or accessories). Nearly 100 people around the country, and in faraway places like Dubai and Bangalore, India, were also taking part in the regimen, with motives including a way to trim back on spending, an outright rejection of fashion, and a concern that the mass production and global transportation of increasingly cheap clothing was damaging the environment.

Having lived out of suitcases or with small wardrobes for extended periods of time, I know only 6 items is too extreme for me (especially because I like very distinctive items), but thought it was an interesting idea.

1) I challenge each wench to do a modified closet diet and purge at least two shopping bags of clothing you haven't worn in a year or more, is in disrepair, or that doesn't fit. Willing to bet you won't even miss the items!

2) What are the items in your closet you just CANNOT live without?

I saw the same story on tv this AM. My daughter went abroad for her spring semester and was allowed to take one suitcase including textbooks as they traveled to nine countries. She took two pairs of jeans, a pair of yoga pants, two skirts, four tops, two layering jackets, and two pairs of shoes. In the last four years, she uses about 75% less clothing. She realized that you do not need very much and lives quit minimally.

1 pair jeans; 1 pair shorts; 1 T-shirt; 1 dress shirt; 1 light jacket; 1 heavy jacket.....it's easier to be a man.

For a lady, add to the allowed 6 pieces, 48 pairs of trendy shoes, 16 purses, a bucket-load of jewelry, matching eyewear, and just a few pounds of make-up, and you're good to go (a girl needs to accessorize!).

I am so with you!!

My children and I do this throughout the year! I have learned that today's clothes definitely do not stand up to much wear-n-tear.
Also, when we are visiting the beach, we usually stay for acouple weeks at a time. The first trip, all I did was LAUNDRY (we are a family of 7). Large beach towels, suits, etc. So ever since that trip years ago, I tell the kids to only pack a backpack of clothing for each child. Plus, they must hand wash and air dry EVERYTHING! It's amazing how very few beach towels they go through now.....And i actually get to go outside when we're there!! LOL!

I am awful about this - I have have always had way too many clothes in my closet and wear maybe half of them. I took 3 bags to Goodwill last weekend and think I can remove another bag this weekend easily.

One thing a friend has beaten into my brain is that if you don't absolutely LOVE something the minute you put it on and it doesn't fit perfectly NOW, you don't buy it. Because if you don't love it in the store, you sure as heck won't like it when you are standing in front of your closet trying to decide what to wear. You buy clothes for the body you have, not the body you want or think you will have in a couple of months. And odds are if it has been in your closet for a couple of years unworn it is out of style anyway.

She is also ruthless and will tell you something looks horrible or will tell you not to buy something because you already have something like it.

She will also make you try things on you don't like on the hanger, in colors or styles you wouldn't pick, and in a variety of styles and sizes until you get the right one.

And guess who has picked out most of my favorite clothes.
