Dunes flattened, trails obliterated: Some Florida state parks undone by Hurricane Michael
Michael wiped out dunes, created new beaches and destroyed access roads from St. George to St. Joe and inland to the Caverns.

Dunes are gone at St. Joseph Peninsula State Park. Roads at Florida Caverns State Parks seem to no longer exist. Hurricane Michael carved a new beach from the shoreline at Little St. George Island with 100-plus mph winds.

Fourteen state parks from Leon to Bay County are closed until further notice due to damage from the Oct. 10 storm.

Can't imagine what it looks like over there. St. Joseph's Peninsula State Park is an amazing place and I trust it will recover and be as wild as ever. It must have been completely washed over if all the dunes are gone. It will take a long time for those to rebuild. The barrier cape is a sacrifice that likely minimized destruction to Port St. Joe.

I saw that St. Andrews State Park in Panama City Beach received a lot of damage and will be seeking volunteers soon to help clean up.

Florida State Parks on Facebook

The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) created the Florida Caverns State Park in the 1930s, and this statue was built to honor their members. It is renowned as a symbol of resilience, and the spirit of a community being able to rebound after a crisis.

The CCC is a program that was formed as a nation-wide initiative by President Franklin D. Roosevelt after the Great Depression to create work for members of the community. Members dug out the tunnels and passageways to create the vast caves that have been explored by visitors for over the past 75 years.

Unfortunately, Hurricane Michael left significant damage on this mesmerizing and historic park, but the two areas that remained untouched are the captivating caves once created by the members of the CCC and this statue. #FLStateParks

SHELL ISLAND

Meanwhile the Friends of St Andrews State Park posted about Shell Island on their Facebook page:

Park staff performed an initial assessment of Shell Island.

There is significant erosion and damage to vegetation along parts of the island viewed by staff. The docks and boardwalks on Shell Island suffered extensive damage and are unusable.

The entire beach will be assessed once park staff can launch the park’s transport boat which carries an ATV/UTV.

Further updates relating to a volunteer day and the status of the park can be found here.
