Gulf World to Release Loggerhead Sea Turtle in Front of Carousel Supermarket on Wednesday, January 26th!

Gulf World Marine Institute (GWMI) is releasing “Horton”, the loggerhead sea turtle into the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday, January 26th at 10:00 am from the beach in front of the Carousel Supermarket at 19440 Front
Beach Road.

The public is invited to attend this event. Please keep in mind this event is subject to change based on weather conditions.

Horton was rescued near Beach Access 64 after he was found listing (floating sideways) and lethargic near the shore. Horton has had a long road to recovery; in addition to buoyancy control problems, he remained lethargic and emaciated for the first few weeks of his rehabilitation. To help with this, veterinary and rescue staff provided regular medical aid in antibiotics and fluid supplementation, and kept Horton in shallow water in order to conserve his limited energy. As his appetite slowly returned, Horton was able to be given deeper water and reduced medial attention.

GWMI is happy to report that Horton is able to swim normally again, and has a healthy appetite that has helped him gain weight. Horton has been medically cleared by veterinary staff and has been cleared for release by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

GWMI would like to thank everyone involved in Horton’s rescue and release. If you see a stranded or deceased dolphin, whale or sea turtle, please immediately report to Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission, 1-888-404-3922 or #FWC on your cell phone.
