Steven Spielberg is evidently going to remake the 1950's Jimmy Stewart flick, Harvey. That's right. The film with the 6'3" invisible rabbit.

What's the deal with these guys thinking that remakes are a good idea? I'm having a hard time picturing this one as a remake. I'm kind of fond of the original, but I can't help thinking that if they remake it they're going to end up putting in a bunch of stupid potty humor and drug references, and all the other things that go with updating that kind of material for today's audience. No, sir, I don't like it...

I've yet to see a "remake" or a tv show made into a movie that was any good.

There are so many great writers, stories, and ideas out there and all they can do is recycle crap! :angry:

Cockeyed optimist that I am, I'd love to see it given to a new generation in a GOOD remake. But I love the overall innocence of Dowd in the original--I wonder if he will keep that? The original did have some innuendo in it, too--the scenes with the doctor and nurse, orderly and the sister, etc. Like you, I would hate to see that expanded into something like "Mr. Deeds."

NoHall, those were my thoughts egg-zackery! And 'innocence' was the exact word that came to my mind. I honestly don't think that this new Hollywood crop has an actor that could play the part with any of the integrity that Stewart did. Can you think of anyone?

Yes, actually. You may think I'm crazy, but the first person who came to mind was Will Smith.

A good actor with a good director can pull it off--think Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump. (Oddly enough, the book's version of Forrest was NOT innocent at all.) I think the hardest part will not be Stewart's part. I think it will be difficult to update it and have the other parts--Mrs. Dowd, Vida Louise, the doctors, nurse, and orderly, etc.--come off as harsh.

That's funny--I hated the book, and was indifferent about the movie. I think that after seeing the movie, I was too shocked by the book to like it.
