INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEANUP
Saturday September 21, 2024
around the globe...

Ocean Conservancy is calling for volunteers worldwide to join the 39th annual International Coastal Cleanup® (ICC), the world’s largest beach and waterway cleanup effort, officially slated for September 21, 2024. With plastic pollution at crisis levels, ICC organizers invite everyone who loves the ocean to take action by joining a cleanup in their area.

Since the first ICC in 1986, over 18 million volunteers have joined local cleanup efforts big and small to remove over 385 million pounds of trash from beaches and waterways around the globe, making it the largest beach and waterway cleanup in the world. At last year’s ICC, over 486,000 volunteers collected nearly 8 million pounds of trash globally, including nearly 2 million cigarette butts, over 1.3 million beverage bottles, and over 850,000 bottle caps. Ocean Conservancy is expecting an even larger turnout in 2024.

“Over a garbage truck’s worth of plastics – much of it single-use – enters the ocean every minute, where they accumulate year after year,” said Ocean Conservancy’s Senior Director of the International Coastal Cleanup, Allison Schutes. “Ocean Conservancy is calling on volunteers worldwide to join this year’s International Coastal Cleanup and #SeatheChange. Every piece of plastic collected and recorded as part of the International Coastal Cleanup informs important research and advocacy and makes a tangible difference for our ocean and the creatures that call it home.”

#SeaTheChange at the 2024 International Coastal Cleanup

Plastic pollution is a massive problem for our ocean, but even small actions can make a big difference. Every bottle, every straw, every piece of trash you clean up can lead to a cleaner, healthier ocean. Join us this season to clean up your local beach, stream, park or neighborhood. When we clean up our home, all those that live in the ocean can #SeaTheChange.

  1. Join the International Coastal Cleanup from anywhere in the world! Use our map to find a coordinator planning a cleanup in your region. Want something closer to home? Go out by yourself or with friends and family to cleanup your favorite beach or beloved park. Trash travels, so even picking up litter off a city sidewalk can help protect wildlife and communities that depend on clean waterways.
  2. Feeling more ambitious? Recruit friends and family to join you in a larger cleanup.Find tips on how to start your own cleanup here.

Walton County Tourism’s Keep Walton County Beautiful hosted South Walton’s International Coastal Cleanup Day on Sept. 21. This year, volunteers collected litter from three regional beach accesses at Miramar Beach, Dune Allen Beach and Inlet Beach. “The beauty of this day is residents and visitors coming out to help clean up the beach, and we’re proud to see people willing to give their time and give back,” said Tourism Director Matt Algarin, who signed in volunteers at Miramar RBA. Volunteers removed roughly 3,500 pieces of trash, weighing approximately 400 pounds in total.
