Michele Jorge, an acupuncture physician and long-time yoga teacher, will present a program on “Kundalini Yoga and Gong Healing” at the Emerald Coast Meditation Society on Jan. 5.

The ECMS will meet at 6:30 p.m. at Christ the King Episcopal Church, at 480 N. Co. Hwy. 393, Santa Rosa Beach, one-half mile north of Hwy. 98. The meeting, open free to the public, begins with 30 minutes of silent meditation.

Jorge has been an acupuncture physician for 20 years and practices in her Santa Rosa Beach home. “The latest addition to my yoga practice and teaching is the Healing Gong,” Jorge says. “The Gong clears out anything that is not expanding or useful.”

Kundalini yoga, says Jorge, “is one of the more spiritual styles of yoga.” Kundalini literally means “coiled,” she says, and is represented by a metaphorical coiled snake at the base of your spine. “It helps open your heart, build strength and release the energy at the base of your spine.” It is one of the oldest forms of yoga, she says, having been practiced in India since 500 B.C. It was brought to the West in 1969.

“Kundalini yoga focuses on breath and movement, and challenges its students both physically and mentally,” she says.

Jorge graduated in 1996 from the Acupuncture & Massage College in Miami, with the title of acupuncture physician. Acupuncture, she says, includes the insertion of needles, the application of moxibustion to parts of the body, and the use of electroacupuncture, Qi Gong, oriental massage, herbal therapy, dietary guidelines and other related therapies.

Jorge also teaches chair yoga and hatha yoga. She is a certified Barkan Method Hot Yoga Teacher and also a licensed esthetician since 2007. Her personal mission is to “support and encourage individuals to participate in their own health and well-being while using ancient drug-free medicinal practices to heal.”

She owns Acupuncture & Yoga at 75 E. Pinehurst Dr. in Santa Rosa Beach.

Following an introduction by Nancy James of the ECMS, Jorge will lead the entire evening’s activities, including the opening 30-minute meditation and the 5-minute closing one.

The ECMS is an ecumenical group open free to anyone. It meets on the first and third Thursdays of the month, September through June. The evening will end around 8 p.m. Anyone who would like meditation instruction should come at 6:15 p.m. Questions? Contact Nancy James, nancyjames@embarqmail.com.
