"Mindfulness in Everyday Life" will be the topic when Peter Snyder addresses the Emerald Coast Meditation Society on April 21.

The free ECMS meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. with a 30-minute meditation at Christ the King Episcopal Church, 480 N. Co. Hwy. 393, Santa Rosa Beach, one-half mile north of Hwy. 98. The ECMS is ecumenical and does not follow any religion.

Snyder says he will present “tools to take your mindfulness practice off the cushion.” There will be time devoted toward formal meditation practice interspersed with implementation and guidance in "informal" practices. There will also be time for dialogue and discussion.

A dharma teacher trained in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Snyder leads an MBSR program for the public and another in a prison setting. In 2014 he completed teacher training in MBSR from the University of Massachusetts, where the program was started by author Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1995.

Snyder has trained in the Kwan Um school of Zen Buddhism since 2009 and in 2014 became a full dharma teacher. He also is a certified yoga teacher and is working on his second 200-hour yoga teacher certification. He teaches yoga in Panama City to both the public and to people who have suffered traumatic brain injury.

He holds a bachelor of social work degree from Florida State University and is working on a master’s degree in social work. Born in Plattsburgh, N.Y., Snyder first went to Panama City 14 years ago, then tried other parts of the South. He has lived in Panama City for the last seven years.

The evening will conclude with a short guided meditation. The ECMS meets on the first and third Thursday of every month except July and August. Anyone who needs meditation instruction should arrive by 6:15 p.m. For information contact Nancy James, nancyjames@embarqmail.com.
