It is very difficult to draw the lines of what to do for whom. Passing the hat among people who know the recipient of a gift, flowers, etc avoids so many pitfalls that using taxpayer dollars creates.

Perhaps this proposal can be strictly limited to recipients being current and active County Employees for reasons of Funeral, Birth, Marriage, etc., as opposed to being open to simply a rubber stamp for a commissioner to kiss a constituents A$% and send gifts to them, their business, their family, their legal team, etc., etc., etc.

I'm against this 100%, but wanted to put that out there as a middle ground as I'm sure the BCC won't consider it...;)

Walton County Board of County Commissioners meeting 4 p.m. on May 9 at South Walton Annex. Among items on the agenda are, public hearing to consider ordinance to allow for the expenditure of funds for expressions of sympathy or congratulations by the county under certain circumstances.

********

Wouldn't you enjoy keeping more of your tax money to give to your favorite causes, charities, hardship cases etc. Or would you rather our wasteful government decide that for you?

It looks like the BCC has been doing this since 2002 but the current Comptroller for the County has expressed concern that this type of expenditure is not specifically authorized by the 2002 ordinance.

Why am I not surprised by this revelation?
