Political races set

The slate of candidates for the August 14 primary has been set. Everyone needs to study the candidates closely.

The district 3 and 5 commission seats will be determined in the primary as will the Clerk of Court. There are two former commissioners running for district 5( Cindy Meadows and Tim Pauls) running against the incumbent (Cecilia Jones) and the former county finance director is running in district 3(Bill Imfeld.) A former Okaloosa commissioner (Paula Riggs) and two retired Walton County deputies ( Bill Chapman and Allen White) are running in district 1 as is the former chairman of the Walton County Republican Committee ( Robert Nelson.)
The only Walton County resident running for state office is retired Walton County deputy and jail director Danny Glidewell who is running for the House district 5 seat.
School board member Mark Davis, Property Appraiser Patrick Pilcher and Tax Collector Rhonda Skipper were reelected without opposition.

And in the race for superintendent of schools, there's incumbent Carlene Anderson challenged by Tricia Hutchison in the primary and Democrat Rosemary Ragle also running.

You forgot the candidate that should win in the Dist. 1 race. Why? He is a retired successful business man with no political or family ties to anyone in Walton County. You who are screaming for "new blood" have it. That, intelligence and a formidable backround as well. His name is Bill Fletcher and by all indications he would make an excellent Walton County Commissioner.

Hope to see you all at this week's meeting at 6:00 PM, Thursday night, June 28th, at the Defuniak Springs Senior Center on College Ave.

Our guest speaker will be Cindy Meadows, who is running for a seat on the Co. Commission. After her talk, there will be a question and answer period. Also, any other candidates present at the meeting will have an opportunity to introduce themselves.


At this meeting, we will also need to discuss plans for the upcoming July 4th parade, so bring your ideas.

It's interesting to read the candidates' statements on the supervisor of elections site. Some of the people running seem to think that they're more qualified because their families have been in Walton county for six generations. And I also love 'member of the NRA'. So am I. So what? Character and qualifications don't have anything to do with whether or not your family was here before Ponce de Leon and knowing how to shoot a gun. Also, in my humble opinion, superintendent of schools should at least have a masters degree. From the candidates statements I can't see that either of the challengers meets that criteria.
