South Walton Academy is raising awareness for students on the Autism Spectrum one swing at a time. The school is hosting their inaugural 2017 Tee Up for Autism Golf Tournament on September 9, at 9 am at Santa Rosa Golf and Beach Club. Teams and individuals alike are in for a fun day of golf, food, entertainment and prizes. Proceeds will benefit South Walton Academy, a new non-profit inclusion school—the first of its kind in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida.

“We are a unique school that accommodates all learning styles and learning abilities. All of our classrooms are inclusive, and this helps with learning and teaching students with and without disabilities,” says South Walton Academy Founder and Executive Director Calley Middlebrooks.

Middlebrooks also serves as an Early Intervention Therapist for the State of Florida’s Early Steps Program. Her son was diagnosed with Autism at age 4 while her daughter was developing at an advanced rate. Through her experiences at work in the community and at home, Calley recognized the need for a school where children could move at their own pace and receive the therapy they need all in one place, a game-changer for most families coping with ASD.

In addition to classroom instruction, students in need receive Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Individual Verbal and Behavior Therapy and Psychological Counseling. Children with certain disabilities such as ASD may qualify for state funded scholarships to help pay for private school. (Learn more at www.stepupforstudents.org and spread the word.)

Sponsorships for the 2017 Tee Up for Autism Golf Tournament are still available and there are many ways to become involved. Sponsor a Child for $110, Donate a Raffle Prize, Sponsor A Hole for $100, or Sponsor an Event such as Longest Drive and Closest to the Pin. Each sponsor will be mentioned in the program, and those sponsoring and event or a hole will have a Tee Box Sign placed at the hole. Volunteers are also needed for the day of the event.

Teams of four can sign up for $375, and individuals can play for $100. Register in advance at www.SouthWaltonAcademy.com. Players will also be able to register in person the day of the event. For more information on how to become a sponsor or volunteer, please contact Jennifer Filippone at 850-687-9789 or email jfilippone@southwaltonacademy.com.

Following the golf tournament on Sunday, September 10 from 10 am-1 pm, Hibiscus Café by Grayton Beach Catering is donating proceeds from Brunch to South Walton Academy. Start your Sunday Funday off right by helping the students of SWA while sipping on mimosas and listening to tunes by Max McCann in the Backyard of Love.

SWA’s goal is to help every child be successful and with that some children need accommodations. Proceeds from the golf tournament and brunch will be used to purchase write well mats, an elevated piece of equipment that helps with both reading and writing. The school also has an immediate need for playground equipment, such as a swing set and slide.

“As a parent, I am always looking for ways to educate others about Autism to make the world a safer place for my child and others on the Autism Spectrum,” says Middlebrooks. “We can all learn from each other to help others succeed, and by doing this together we can make the world a better place.”
