The Division of Humanities, Fine and Performing Arts at Northwest Florida State College has announced the cast for the spring production of William Shakespeare's ''Richard III'' to be performed March 18 through 21at 7:30 pm in the Sprint Theater at the Mattie Kelly Arts Center in Niceville. As one of Shakespeare's most notorious villains, Richard III has been played by such notables as Laurence Olivier, Kenneth Branagh, and others. The play is dominated by Richard, the hunchback Duke of Gloucester, who becomes King Richard III through a series of horrible acts such as killing off his enemies, his kinsmen, his wife and most of his supporters. This self-professed villain will be portrayed by Clint Mahle of Niceville in the NWF State College production.
In the play, Richard schemes to pit his brothers, King Edward IV, played by Alan Tuttle of Niceville, and George, Duke of Clarence, played by Benjamin Olson of Niceville, against each other in an attempt to gain the crown for himself (Olson also portrays the Earl of Richmond). By insinuating charges of treason against George, Richard has him arrested by the Keeper of the Tower of London, Brackenbury, played by Michelle Rhodes of DeFuniak Springs. He also brazenly woos Princess Anne, played by Chelsea Sorenson of Shalimar, the widow of the Prince of Wales, who was stabbed to death by Richard. Two murderers who conspire with Richard in other plots are played by Kiana Johnson of Niceville and Joshua Burger of Valparaiso.
Edward's loyalist lords; Rivers, Hastings, Grey and Dorset, who are first imprisoned and then executed, are played by Joseph Bishop of Eglin Air Force Base, Danny Thomas of Niceville, Greg Stoughton of Bluewater Bay, and Robert Reynolds of Fort Walton Beach respectively. Cursing Richard amidst all the plotting and feuding is Margaret, the widow of King Henry VI, played by Sheila Johnson of Crestview and Richard's mother, the Duchess of York, is played by Cynthia Rhodes of DeFuniak Springs.
Servants who conspire with the devious Richard III are Buckingham, played by Bruce Collier of DeFuniak Springs, and Catesby, played by Bruce Culpepper of DeFuniak Springs. Once Richard is conveniently a widower, after the suspicious demise of Anne, he makes a ploy to marry the late King Edward's daughter, his niece - Elizabeth, played by Alicia Leonard of DeFuniak Springs. The last of Richard's supporters, Lord Stanley, is played by Robert Drake of Niceville.
