Seaside Repertory Theatre's Autumn Playwright Festival
David Mamet's Speed the Plow
Oct 13 - Oct 30 (Wednesdays through Saturdays)
7:30pm

The featured production of this year's Autumn Playwright Festival, Speed-the-Plow is a razor-sharp, laugh out loud evisceration of the movie business. A new studio executive is approached by an old friend to green light a movie project that would jump-start the friend's career as a producer. As the men strategize and jockey for position, an apparently lowly female office temp inserts herself into the power struggle, with stunning results.

Speed-the-Plow will play Wednesdays through Saturdays at 7:30pm, October 13th through the 30th, in the Seaside Meeting Hall Theatre.

Tickets are $30 reserved seating for the general public, and Rep members receive a 20% discount - now is the perfect time to become a member!

If you are not familiar with the playwright, David Mamet, we did a little googling for you.;-) He and his work are very interesting.

David Mamet - IMDb

"Mamet speak"

Mamet's style of writing dialogue, marked by a cynical, street-smart edge, precisely crafted for effect, is so distinctive that it came to be called Mamet speak.[10] He often uses italics and quotation marks to highlight particular words and to draw attention to his characters' frequent manipulation and deceitful use of language. His characters frequently interrupt one another, their sentences trail off unfinished, and their dialogue overlaps. Mamet himself has criticized his (and other writers') tendency to write "pretty" at the expense of sound, logical plots.[11]
When asked how he developed his style for writing dialogue, Mamet said, "In my family, in the days prior to television, we liked to while away the evenings by making ourselves miserable, based solely on our ability to speak the language viciously. That's probably where my ability was honed."[12]

Opening night report!

The evening started at 6 with a member reception- members, board members, staff, and actors enjoyed some great food on the Rep patio, and for once it wasn't 90 degrees! Thanks so much to Amavida Coffee (the best hummus), Crush (beautiful focaccia sandwiches with meats and cheeses), Great Southern (mini chorizo burger and grilled pimento cheese!), and Raw & Juicy (those gorgeous raw spring rolls). We will definitely do another member event like this at the theatre- stay tuned!

Like many people who will see this show, I went into it cold- did not see any rehearsal, did not read the play. I wanted to experience it as a complete David Mamet newbie!

John Stimac, Drew Brown, and Anne Marie Carroll brought Mamet's words off the page and turned them into film-industry people who represent the ugliness of behind-the-scenes Hollywood. The tension between them on stage was so real that I felt like the 4th person in the show- it totally draws you in! (and pg 13 for language- this is a grownup play- the show would completely lose it's edginess without the cursing).

Thank you Director Brook Stetler - your talent shines through in every production you do.

A show like this in our community is a rare treat. The Q&A with the actors and director after the show was interesting for both what they said about the show AND the comments from the audience- a well-traveled group who are theatre lovers and really "know their theatre"!

The Q&As are such a great way to learn about the playwright, the play, and how the actors and director sort it all out and get it to the stage! They have all done their Mamet "homework", and we have had quite a few audience members that know a lot about Mamet too and have made interesting contributions to the conversation!
