The Cultural Arts Association will hold a sepia workshop led by watercolor artist Mary Brockett on Saturday, March 22 from 9am to 3pm at the former Bayou Arts & Antiques at 105 Hogtown Bayou Road just off County Road 393 North.

After twenty-seven years of study under some of the best watercolor artists in the United States, including Nina Fritz, Barbara Nechis, Skip Lawrence and Rob O?Dell, Brockett is now a teacher in her own right. She has been a private watercolor instructor through the Three Arts Alliance, at conventions in Las Vegas, and now with the Cultural Arts Alliance. Brockett?s work is exhibited and sold at Gallery 331.

In Brockett?s sepia workshop on March 22, artists will use one color, sepia, and will build with consecutive layers of wet and dry washes. She will also teach dry brush techniques. Brockett explains, ?This is a class about painting, not drawing. So we use the black and white copy of a photo for two purposes: First, to trace with graphite paper the general likeness onto the watercolor paper, and then to get an idea of where the lights and darks are in the painting.? Brockett says that lights and darks are very important to the success of this style of painting.
