A child on bicycle was struck by a car this afternoon in Seagrove. It sounds serious. Child was apparently unresponsive at scene and was life flighted out. I wonder if details will be forthcoming? Terrible situation.

Hate to hear that. A lot of folks are here visiting. Very hectic.

    Be careful out there everyone.

Saw it in the Walton Sun, too. If anyone has updates, please post. Horrible.

According to a press release from the Florida Highway Patrol, the teen was heading west on 30A around 2:45 p.m. when she attempted to make a U-turn and traveled into the path of a 2017 Toyota 4 Runner.

SOUTH WALTON — A 13-year-old girl from Georgia was airlifted from County Road 30A in serious condition Wednesday after pedaling a bicycle into the path of a vehicle.

According to a press release from the Florida Highway Patrol, the teen was heading west on 30A around 2:45 p.m. when she attempted to make a U-turn and traveled into the path of a 2017 Toyota 4 Runner.

She was flown to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, the release said.

The driver of the vehicle, a 36-year-old Miramar Beach woman, was uninjured.

The accident happened at the intersection of CR 30A and Live Oak Street.

The sad truth is that there are entirely too many people riding bicycles on 30a. But with all the bicycle rental shops and the thousands of bicycles on the road, children on bicycles are in a very dangerous position. Even adult cyclists are bad about running through stop signs and ignoring the rules of the road. But minor children are the most vulnerable. Prayers for this precious child and her family.

I agree Kayti. I see too many cyclists who believe traffic laws don’t apply to them most often it is ignoring traffic signals and stop signs. They set a bad example for kids.

We stay at Seaside. Avoid 30A most of the time. Ride our bikes early or within Seaside or take the back route to Watercolor to ride safely. Hopefully the child will be alright. Ellen

I would really like to have the county require all of the bike rental companies to issue high visibility green or orange helmets with all bike rentals. Or, better, a proactive rental company should just include the helmets. Being a rider myself, it stresses me when I see people on these rentals sans head/brain protection.

Praying for this young girl. Hope she makes a full recovery and lives an extraordinary life.

Florida law requires bicycle riders or passengers under the age of 16 to wear a helmet. I don't think I've ever seen this law enforced, though.

I am sure it represents a small minority of the bikes we see out and about, but some visitors have figured out that it is cheaper to buy a bike online, have it shipped down and assembled here and simply leave behind than to rent one.

Is there enforcement of anything in SoWal? I don't understand why there isn't more of a law enforcement presence on 30A.

I believe most of the bike shops furnish helmets for minor children, but I don't see how bike shops can make people wear the helmets. And how would law enforcement enforce the helmet law anyway? Are they supposed to stop every bicyclist and see if they are over the age of 16?

I think you misquoted me but there are too many cars on 30a. There are too many people riding bicycles, and too many people as well. It's dangerous and it's going to get worse.
