With Veteran’s Day on Tuesday, the Walton County Commissioner meeting began with a call for all veterans present to stand and be recognised. Those attending applauded their service. Commissioners also took time to recognise the Geographical Information Systems or GIS employees who make the maps and draw the lines for the county.

Commissioners also agreed to delay action on the “Leave No Trace” and outdoors ordinance and the easement for the beach. Commissioners felt they had questions and wanted to gather more information including a possible meeting with the Army Corps. Commissioner Meadows asked for the delay and commissioner Comander said she has received conflicting information. Expect these meetings to take place early next year. Any meeting between the Corp and commissioners will have to be advertised and open to the public. Commissioners invited interested parties or stakeholders to to submit questions and concerns now. Several audience members spoke in agreement to the delay while others spoke in favor of allowing comments now. Some spoke about property rights and what they claim is a taking. Later, commissioner Chapman said, if the Corps comes over, he expects them to say something, even if it that it is not their jurisdiction.

Commissioners considered property near the beach. This is near Eastern Lake and it has dunes. One reason for the land purchase is to provide for more parking. Staff will continue with the proposal and return later. They also moved funds for the Geronimo Street turn lane and approved the contract. Commissioners approved several revised road contracts with the FDOT.

The old state bunker, the old Walton EOC bunker is being put back into service. With the remodel being complex, staff asked to use a contractor. The plan is to get the facility ready before hurricane season. Staff said someone has offered to donate the Gaskin Masonic Lodge. The facility is in need of repairs, but Administrator Larry Jones said it low and the maintenance costs would basically be the electric. Kenneth Pridgeon said residents use the building for family reunions, birthday parties and events. He also said the residents would like to put in a museum to hold items donated by the community. Commissioner Comander suggested adding more park features such as a basketball court.

Walton has been working to update the ISO ratings. This is the number the insurance uses to help determine coverage levels. Walton has a new designation of 5X. If you are within five miles of a fire department and meet water issues, you can be under the 5 ISO rating. These ratings will be published by the ISO on February 1st. This could help lower some homeowner’s rates.

TDC Director Jim Bagby talked about the shoulder season and noted several restaurants are not shutting down this year.
