John Orr, a noted teacher in the Vipassana tradition, will speak at the March 5 meeting of the Emerald Coast Meditation Society, replacing Yaani Drucker, the scheduled speaker, who was called away because of a family emergency. Orr will speak on “What Sets Insight Meditation Practice, or Vipassana, Apart?”

The free meeting will start with a 30-minute meditation at 6:30 p.m. at Christ the King Episcopal Church, 480 N. Co. Hwy. 393, Santa Rosa Beach, one-half mile north of Hwy. 98. The ECMS is ecumenical and follows no religion.

Orr received ordination as a Buddhist monk while living in Thailand and India for eight years in the 1970s. Since 1980 he has been teaching and leading retreats around the world. He has also practiced in the Taoist, Dzogchen and Hindu Yoga traditions.

Orr also leads groups to a center in Brazil run by the healer John of God, and says he has been “deeply affected by my contact with John of God.” Orr is an interfaith minister and the dharma teacher for the New Hope Sangha in Durham, N.C., and also teaches at Duke University.

The evening will conclude with a short guided meditation. The ECMS meets on the first and third Thursday of every month except July and August. Anyone who needs meditation instruction should arrive by 6:15 p.m. For information contact Nancy James, at nancyjames@embarqmail.com.
