La Cocina Mexican Grill & Bar
¡Ay, caramba! La Cocina Mexican Grill and Bar has been serving crave-worthy Tex-Mex with a coastal twist since they opened their doors in 2009. The Seacrest Beach eatery is colorful, bright, and welcoming, but it’s the great food and friendly service that keeps loyal followers coming back.
Father and daughter team Rick and Christy Spell bought the place from George and Ann Hartley. The dynamic SoWal duo had built a culinary trifecta, but were ready to start downsizing and wanted to hand off two of their successful restaurants to the right people.
Keeping one foot in Tennessee as owners of Brookhaven Pub and Grill in Memphis, Rick and Christy have added a little beach flavor to their restaurant group, taking over ownership of SoWal institutions La Cocina and George's at Alys Beach.
“I love this place, the people, the fresh product - and we wanted to keep it as fresh as we found it,” Christy says.
The proof is in the tacos. La Cocina’s Fish Tacos come grilled or fried with roasted poblano lime tartar and they’re served with rice and beans. Formerly known as Senora Anna’s Fish Tacos after La Cocina’s founder, this recipe pre-dates La Cocina itself and still carries on the tradition of great taste.
The Flakito or The Skinny Plate is a health conscious choice with grilled chicken on a bed of spinach with guacamole, fruit salsa and feta served with a warm tortilla. Coastal Tex-Mex at its finest. Everything on the menu pairs beautifully with the warm Tortilla Soup topped with fresh cut avocado.
For dinner, the restaurant goes all out with La Cocina’s Especial-grilled flat iron steak with yucca fries. Fajitas Tradicional are always a great choice. Or go all out with Snapper Veracruz, pan seared gulf snapper topped with tomatoes, olives, capers and jalapeños served with tomatillo rice and Mexican corn.
The food may be spicy, but the drinks are cold at La Cocina. Enjoy a selection of imported Mexican beers, as well as mouthwatering cocktails. The Top Shelf Margarita is a go-to, or you could shake things up a bit with the La CoRita, their signature house margarita with a swirl of red sangria. What’s a pitcher between friends?
If you want to sip on something interesting and watch your girlish figure, try a beverage from La Cocina’s Skinny Menu. The Fire and Ice mixes Sauza Silver Tequila with fresh muddled cucumber and lime, and a hint of Siracha and agave nectar. ¡Muy caliente!
