A different type of Christmas

If we all hate the commercialism of Christmas (I do), then why to we continue to go along with it? I have racked my brain trying to think of something to do when the family gets together that would be funn, and did not totally revolve around gift-giving. We no longer have small children (nieces & nephews) in the family, they are all teenagers. This really changes the feeling of Christmas. :( I want Christmas to continue to be funn for them but all we do is exchange gift cards.

Any ideas? We have done the Chinese auction (I think some people refer to it as dirty Santa) route, but that's just not funn unless you have a larger group. I don't want to be a Scrooge, but each year that passes, I feel myself becoming more and more Scroogish.

But she already revolted! That's how Miss Kitty got such a good title when she hit 10G. Tons better than being called a Whale. :clap_1:

What is this? I am too weak with exhaustion to google and read anthing.

Just make sure when you give a gift it is personal even though it may be a gift card:

For instance, attach a handwritten note with the gift card packaging which says something along the lines of..."I saw lots of things in the store from where this gift card is from and I thought of you when I saw all of the items, so I thought a gift card would be nice for you to go and have your pick at whatever you want."

No, thank God. I am only getting about 4-5 hours sleep per night now--it's crunch time. Final exams (100% of the grades in all of my classes) are December 1-8.

RO, I had to look this one up. I believe everyone would like a red envelope. :clap_1: I'm just looking for a funn way to give it to them.

Not sure if this is an idea that would work, but a few years ago, we started decorating gingerbread houses. Horribly messy and funny....we laughed until we cried. Ages ranged from 4-79, and we look forward to it each year. One year the roof collapsed and we called it the "Barrio". If I can find a pic, I will post it.My daughters friends(teenagers) stop by as well to join in the fun. Just a good way to spend time together that does not require purchasing gifts.

On Christmas Eve, we always play Pictionary and Trivial Pursuit. The more alcohol that's consumed, the more "entertaining" it gets.
sounds like funn DD..can I come to your house Christmas eve?

Hi, SoWal friends,

One of our best holidays ever was the year we adopted a family in need, a single mother with three children who lost her job just before Thankgiving. We purchased toys, a clothing outfit, and a warm winter coat for each of the children; also, a nice work outfit and some luxury comfort items for Mom. Then we put together all the groceries for a turkey & trimmings holiday dinner (one easy to prepare), right down to the holiday pies. Involved my husband's sons in all of it and twas a real eye-opener for them to see how fortunate they are. We still had our own Christmas, just a little more modest and richer for our experience.

Dbuck, you know the old say about Food Is Love. How about a wonderful Christmas dinner (catered or homemade, whatever lights your fire) followed by some quality time? Like maybe games or watching favorite Xmas movies together, something that would get everyone involved. My neighbors play Charades after dinner (and lots of drinks!).

I love these suggestions. Wonderful food with family, quality time together, while providing an entire Christmas for a family in need. Oh, we really need to do so much more of this.
