A sad story...

I just got home from my friend's house. I think some of you may remember back in January when I posted that one of this friend's schnauzer's drowned in her pool. Well, tonight was #2.:( Her female schnauzer (Delta) had one puppy in April--Una Belle. Una Belle was born in her office at our work and we have all watched her grow and be just downright adorable for the last two months. Tonight, my friend let the dogs out when she got home, and just ran in to change clothes and turn on the water in her front yard. When she went back around back, she found Una Belle on the bottom of the pool. She tried CPR but to no avail. Her husband is out of town. I just couldn't stand for her to be alone, so I went over. There was nothing I could do but hug her....my heart is breaking for her. Thanks for this place...so I can get it out. :(

I am so sorry to hear this, wow. I always thought dogs could automatically swim, instinct. That is just so horrible to have it happen again. Take care of your friend.

So sorry DD. I can't even have pets now - it's just too hard to lose them for any reason, but certainly even more so in such a tragic way as this. My heart goes out to you and your friend.

I guess they have to learn :idontno: --she was pretty little. She thinks maybe she just fell in the deep end and was too little to get to the steps. The first one that drowned got stuck under the pool cover. I just feel so sorry for her!

Mine can swim. But the problem is they usually can't get to the side to get out. Schnauzers are usually low to the ground little things. So eventually they just get tired and sadly just give up. :(

Yep, I think that's probably what happened. Thank you all for your kind words-I will pass them along. I didn't have any words to really comfort her, we just cried together.
Thanks again!

I am so sadden about this. :( I remember this story and how you brought the danger to my attention when Molly was a little puppy. gttbm is correct about the steps...Molly did fall in once with both of us right there and we watched for a second while she tried to climb out on the side...it was pitiful.

Those little dogs and pools just don't mix. Our weiner dog jumped in the pool once and she went straight to the bottom. Luckily, Mrs Skunkape dove right in and fished her out.

What an absolute, utter nightmare. I can't even allow my head to fully think on all she must have experienced, it's just too hard. My sincerest condolences.

What a horrible thing to have happen. Our dogs are our babies and I can't imagine losing one, much less two of them.
Dogs (even big ones) and inground pools really don't mix well.
Our neighbor has a beagle and a Weimeraner, and an inground pool.. they have a dog ladder, similar to the one on this page:
http://www.doggear.com/dog-safety.htm
They have gotten in the pool with the dogs and trained them to use the ladder, so that they always know where it is in case they fall in.
