I looked briefly and didn't" see a recent thread on the Afghanistan withdrawal. Sorry if i missed it, but since the "usual's" are still whining about Goetz, Trump and Covid, I thought we could discuss the Afghanistan withdrawal.

Glad we are withdrawing. Hate that there was a loss of life and angry that those Americans who all of a sudden decided to leave when President Biden advised we were leaving even after an extention. Curious why equipment was left when the military was aware we were leaving.

Americans and Afghans have been aware that we were withdrawing for over a year and a half. So, I see no useful purpose fretting about the people who chose to wait until the last month or last week to seek safe passage out of the country. It is still a warzone, and people can and will be killed in a warzone. As for the equipment, we really had no good options. Period. We hade hopes that the Afghan military could defend itself, but the total corruption, throughout the government and the military, made that impossible. We certainly couldn't just take the equipment from the "loyal" Afghans, either morally or logistically. War is hell, and the effects of hell can last a damn long time.

Typical and pretty rudimentary, so far. Anyone care to dig a deeper than canned tp's

After twenty years of training and support the equipment was turned over to the Afghan military for use in defending their country. The Taliban were the ones the previous admin negotiated with for the American withdrawal completely cutting out the Afghanistan government. It was said the Taliban would kill the terrorists. Troop levels were drawn down to 2500 so not sure why anyone would expect American troops to suddenly scour the countryside for weapons that were promised to an ally.
This right wing faux outrage is tiresome. The enemy killed the troops as they do in all conflicts. Starting wars is always easy it’s the ending part that’s dangerous.
We have brave young people in service risking their lives abroad trying to bring people to safety, meanwhile at home we have chickensht selfish aholes who won’t do a damn thing to protect their neighbors from a preventable disease.

I think everyone who regularly voices their opinions in the sowal lounge has made their opinion's known about Biden's execution of the contract Trump signed with the Taliban. Just like everything else it seems it became political. If Biden had torn up the contract and began intense fighting with the Taliban there would have been American lives lost AND he would have been criticized politically and personally. Here is the reality of the State of the Nation. In politics those in power are always damned as in damned if you do and damned if you don't. However in terms of reality President Biden would have been better off following President Obama rather than President Trump. Please share with us who you yourself would rather have followed. Your answer may explain why you complain :)

I beg to differ that perpetuating that war like Obama did, would have been a better decision. Some politicians see things in only the short term (i.e. getting re-elected- see Trump ignoring a deadly virus) Others see things in terms of a much broader vision of the world. Perpetuation this war is simply morally wrong, and Biden had the guts to make a really tough decision that will look terrible in the near future, but will seen as the right policy in the long run.
